Men’s Basketball Hosts Texas A&M in Charity Exhibition Game

HOUSTON – The University of Houston Men's Basketball program will play host to Texas A&M in a charity exhibition game inside Fertitta Center at 4 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 27, Head Coach Kelvin Sampson announced Friday.

Proceeds from the game will benefit the Greater Houston Disaster Alliance Hurricane Beryl Recovery Fund, which assists those who were affected by the storm.

The Greater Houston Disaster Alliance is a partnership between the Greater Houston Community Foundation and the United Way of Greater Houston, both of which are 501I(3) nonprofit organizations. As of Oct. 2, the fund had raised nearly $6 million to assist those in need.

Houston won both meetings against the Aggies during the 2023-24 season, including a 100-95 thriller in overtime during the NCAA Tournament Round of 32.

On Monday, a request link for Charity Exhibition tickets will be sent to donors and Men's Basketball season-ticket holders.

Seating requests for the game will be prioritized into two tiers.

Tier 1
– Corbin J. Robertson Society members
– Linking Coogs Run It Back Campaign supporters
– Guy V. Lewis Development Facility renovation supporters
– 2024-25 50/50 Club members

Tier 2
– All 2024-25 Houston Men's Basketball season-ticket holders, who do not qualify for Tier 1

All requests for Tier 1 and Tier 2 will be allocated via the Cougar Pride Priority Point System.

If available, any remaining tickets will go on sale to the general public beginning Monday, Sept. 23.

ABOUT the COUGARS
Under the leadership of 2024 National Coach of the Year and 2024 Big 12 Coach of the Year Kelvin Sampson, Houston returns nine lettermen and four starters from the 2023-24 team, which posted a 32-5 overall record, advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 for the fifth consecutive season and won the Big 12 Conference regular-season championship by two games in its first year in the league.

Graduate forward J'Wan Roberts and graduate guard LJ Cryer recently received Preseason All-America honors from Blue Ribbon College Yearbook.

Roberts was the Cougars' leading rebounder with 6.8 rebounds per contest a year ago and was one of only three student-athletes to rank among the Big 12's Top-10 leaders in both offensive and defensive rebounding.

He ranks among the Cougars' Top-10 career leaders in wins, games played and Fertitta Center wins and is poised to become only the fourth student-athlete in program history to record 1,000+ points and 1,000+ rebounds during his career.

In his first season with the Cougars, Cryer led Houston with 15.5 points per game and topped the league with 3.0 3-point field goals per contest. One of only three Cougars to start all 37 games, the Katy, Texas, native led Houston with 13 20-point games and received All-America Honorable Mention from the United Basketball Writers Association.

SERIES HISTORY vs. TEXAS A&M
• Houston owns a 55-32 lead against Texas A&M in the series, which began during the 1946-47 season.
• At 87 games, Texas A&M is the second-most played opponent in school history. Only SMU's 92 games (Houston leads 54-32) ranks higher.
• Houston has won each of the last two meetings against the Aggies, both from the 2023-24 season. In the most recent matchup, the Cougars overcame four starters fouling out to take a 100-95 win in overtime during the NCAA Tournament Round of 32 inside FedExForum in Memphis, Tenn., on March 24, 2024. Guard Emanuel Sharp led the way with career highs of 30 points and seven 3-pointers.
• In the first meeting of the 2023-24 season, Sharp led the Cougars with 21 points and drained five 3-pointers, including a key trey that pushed the Houston lead to five points with less than 30 seconds remaining.
• That was the Cougars' first win against Texas A&M since a 70-61 decision in overtime inside Hofheinz Pavilion in Houston on Dec. 27, 2003.
• The two schools met at least twice a year every season from 1975-76 through 1995-96 as Southwest Conference members. The Cougars and Aggies also met at least once a year every season from 1950-51 through 1965-66.
