Award celebrates community leaders from all industries and sectors who have broken glass ceilings
HOUSTON – University of Houston Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Development and Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) DeJuena Chizer has been recognized among the Top 30 Influential Women of Houston Class of 2024, announced last Friday evening inside the Royal Sonesta Houston Galleria.
The Top 30 Women celebrate the accomplishments and giving spirit of hundreds of diverse, influential, and powerful women in Houston and its surrounding areas. Each honoree has taken risks, embraced falls, believed in themselves and remained courageous and resilient throughout their climb. Honorees' fearless attitudes allowed them to break glass ceilings and establish themselves as leaders committed to growth and professional excellence in their respective fields and in the community.
"I am grateful for this incredible honor and thankful for the recognition," Chizer said. "This is truly a reflection of the support I receive from my family and the amazing people I have the privilege to work with, as we do the work of impacting the lives of those we serve. This recognition continues to fuel the motivation of building 'Champions for Life.'"
A proud University of Houston graduate and former standout women's basketball student-athlete, Chizer is in her 25th year with Houston Athletics. Before Chizer moved into her current position, she served eight seasons as a women's basketball assistant coach (2000-2008).
In her current role, Chizer provides direct administrative oversight to four women's sports programs and is responsible for the overall welfare and development of 450-plus Houston student-athletes. She has direct departmental oversight of the Academic Center for Excellence, Student-Athlete Welfare and Development, Sports Medicine, Sports Nutrition, Career Development, and Counseling Services. She serves as the sports administrator lead, collaborating with each program's head coach and primary sports administrator. She also serves as the liaison to Title IX and the Dean of Students offices.
The Top 30 Women sponsor an annual gala, The Top 30 Influential Women of Houston Awards, devoted to acknowledging leaders from all industries and sectors, including medicine, design, finance, law, fashion, construction and more.
The Top 30 Women come from different backgrounds, share different beliefs and have overcome different obstacles, but their common denominator is their undeniable quest for success and passion to mentor the next generation of leaders.
The accolade is the latest for Chizer who was named the 2024 WBCA Administrator of the Year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association in March for excelling at encouraging the growth and quality of women's basketball programs and women's athletic programs overall.
