Cougar coach signed through 2025-26 after leading team to NCAA Regional for second straight season
HOUSTON – After leading the University of Houston Women's Golf program to its second straight season of NCAA Regional team competition, Carolyn Macow Leatherwood Head Coach Lydia Lasprilla has signed a contract extension through the 2025-26 season.Deputy Director of Athletics Monty Porter made the announcement Tuesday afternoon.
"I am extremely thankful to the University of Houston for its decision to extend my contract. Houston is a special place, and our Women's Golf program has great years ahead of us," Lasprilla said. "We work hard to bring in top players and outstanding young women to represent UH on the golf course and in the classroom, and I am excited to get back to work this fall with our student-athletes and Assistant Coach Daniel Park as we continue to build something special here."
Lasprilla enters her fourth season as Carolyn Macow Leatherwood Head Coach for the 2024-25 season.
"During her time as head coach, Lydia has continually improved our Women's Golf program in every way. While results on the course speak for themselves, Lydia's abilities to grow the program away from the course are equally impressive," Porter said. "The University of Houston is both fortunate and excited about Lydia's continued leadership."
In three seasons as Houston's head coach, Lasprilla has led Houston to a pair of NCAA Regional berths and one NCAA Regional individual qualifier appearance with five student-athletes receiving All-Conference honors,
Those honorees include Moa Svedenskiold, who was named to an All-Conference Team and finished among the Top-Five leaders at a Conference Championships for the second straight year in 2023-24.
Off the course, 15 Cougars have been named to Conference All-Academic Teams under her watch with nine receiving Women's Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar recognition.
With those accomplishments, the Cougars ended the 2023-24 season at #36 in the final Clippd national rankings and fourth among Big 12 schools.
In the most recent season, Lasprilla's Cougars competed at the 2024 NCAA Auburn Regional, earning the program's best NCAA postseason finish with a sixth-place showing and falling only two strokes shy of advancing to the NCAA Championships for the first time as a team in school history.
Her team opened the 2023-24 season with a record-setting showing at the Sam Golden Invitational at Oakmont Country Club in Corinth, Texas, on Sept. 12-13, 2023. The Cougars finished with a 54-hole score of 48-under 816 for the fourth-lowest performance in NCAA history while their Final-Round score of 20-under 268 stood among the Top 20 in NCAA history.
Freshman Ellen Yates became the first Cougar in school history to win an individual title in her collegiate debut and tied the school record with a score of 14-under 202 at that event.
Lasprilla joined the Cougars as an assistant coach in June 2018. In three seasons in that role, she helped lead Houston to two NCAA Regional berths as a team and three team tournament championships, including the 2019 American Athletic Conference Championships title at Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Fla.
She also worked with All-American Karen Fredgaard, who competed as an individual at the 2021 NCAA Championships at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
