Cougars in the Pros: May 30

We are two months into the 2024 season and there is plenty of noteworthy information to update Houston Cougar Baseball fans about already. Cougar alums have been traded, promoted and made MLB debuts, while a steady dose of Cougars continue to get better down on the farms.

This is the first of a monthly summer series updating fans on Houston Cougars in affiliated baseball.

	Connor Wong		Boston Red Sox Major League (MLB)	Boston's Opening Day catcher is having a career-year at the plate through two months, hitting .329 with five home runs and 19 RBI. Wong leads the team in average and is third on the team in hits. 2024: .329 avg, 46 hits, 5 HR, 19 RBI, .839 OPS
	John King		St. Louis Cardinals Major League (MLB)	King was recalled on April 24 and has pitched well since his return to the Bigs. The lefty has not allowed an earned run in his last seven outings and has four strikeouts in his last 8.1 innings. 2024: 1-1, 14 app, 1.65 ERA, 16.1 IP, 12 K, 0.86 WHIP
	Jared Triolo		Pittsburgh Pirates Major League (MLB)	Made his first MLB Opening Day Roster and has played in 50 games across three different positions with the majority at second base. The infielder had a season-long five game hitting streak going in early April. 2024: .205 avg, 36 hits, 3 HR, 19 RBI, .560 OPS
	Austin Pruitt		Texas Rangers Major League (MLB)	Pruitt was transferred to the 60-day IL with a right knee media meniscus injury. 2024: 0-0, 4 app, 4.1 IP, 12.46 ERA
	Robert Gasser		Milwaukee Brewers Major League (MLB)	Gasser has wowed in his first four starts for the Brewers since being promoted for his Big League debut on May 10. The southpaw has struck out 13 in his first 23.0 innings at the MLB level with a 1.96 ERA. Gasser spun 6.0 scoreless in his MLB debut with four strikeouts while allowing no walks and no runs. 2024: 2-0, 1.96 ERA, 4 starts, 23.0 IP, 13 K, 0.96 WHIP
	Corey Julks		Chicago White Sox Major League (MLB)	Traded to the White Sox by the Astros on May 15, Julks was called up to the White Sox two days later and has played in 11 games since then. On the Southside, Julks his hitting .303 with 10 hits and four extra-base hits. 2024: .303 avg, 16 hits, 1 HR, 3 RBI, .675 OPS
	Nick Hernandez		El Paso Chihuahuas Triple A (AAA)	A steady horse in the El Paso bullpen, Hernandez has pitched scoreless outings in 11 of his last 12 appearances. The right hander has dropped his ERA from 6.35 after allowing four runs in his first three appearances, to 2.08 after pitching nine straight scoreless outings. 2024: 0-0, 2.08 ERA, 21.2 IP, 31 K, 1.20 WHIP
	Connor Hollis		ACL Padres – Rehab Assignment Rehab Assignment (Rookie)	Started a rehab assignment on May 28 after going on the IL in late April. Went 2 for 4 in his rehab assignment debut. Had bee hitting .237 with eight RBI on 14 hits at the Double-A level before his injury. 2024: .254 avg, 16 hits, 1 HR, 8 RBI, .689 OPS
	Logan Clayton		Hillsboro Hops High A (A+)	Has been nearly unhittable after going back to Hillsboro with a 0.77 ERA in 11.2 innings in the Northwest League after starting the season with a 5.96 ERA in Amarillo (Double-A). 2024: 0-3, 4.19 ERA, 5 starts, 34.1 IP, 27 K, 1.19 WHIP
	Jaycob Deese		Greensboro Grasshoppers High A (A+)	Has made 11 of his 12 appearances at the High-A level after a spot appearance in Double A. Struck out a season-high three hitters in his season debut. 2024: 1-1, 11.30 ERA, 14.1 IP, 13 K, 2.44 WHIP
	Ben Sears		Quad Cities River Bandits High A (A+)	Nearly perfect as the Quad City closer with four saves in five opportunities. Sears has pitched scoreless outings in 11 of his 16 appearances. 2024: 0-1, 4 saves, 1.86 ERA, 19.1 IP, 15 K, 1.03 WHIP
	Zach Arnold		Jersey Shore Blue Claws High A (A+)	Has six multi-hit games this season including a three-game multi-hit streak in mid April. Hit is first home run of the season on April 14 as part of a two-hit game. 2024: .228 avg, 23 hits, 2 HR, 15 RBI, .649 OPS
	Josh Ekness		Beloit Sky Carp High A (A+)	Nearly perfect as the Quad City closer with five saves in six chances. Has worked 14 scoreless in his 17 appearances out of the bullpen. Had a seven- and five-game stretch where he did not allow a run. 2024: 1-2, 1.80 ERA, 5 saves, 20.0 IP, 30 K, 1.00 WHIP
