Sampy Qualifies for NCAA Championships, Four Men Advance to Quarterfinals

De’Vion Wilson, Louie Hinchliffe, Shaun Maswanganyi and Trey East III secure spots in Friday’s quarterfinal round
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Senior Christyan Sampy punched his ticket for the NCAA Outdoor Championships and four Cougars advanced to Friday's quarterfinal round of the NCAA West Preliminary Round on Wednesday.
Sampy earned Houston's first 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships bid as he clinched a share of the top spot in the men's pole vault with a mark of 5.42m (17-9.25). This marks Sampy's third trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships and returns to Eugene for the first time since 2021.
Senior De'Vion Wilson cruised to Friday's quarterfinal in the 110-meter hurdles, securing the top overall time at 13.24 (+2.2).
Sophomore Louie Hinchliffe set a personal best and earned the top spot in the 100-meter dash as he crossed the finish line at 10.00. With his performance on Wednesday, Hinchliffe is tied for the fifth-fastest time in program history. The Sheffield, England, native hit the Olympic standard time and recorded the 12th fastest time in Great Britain and Northern Ireland history.
Senior Shaun Maswanganyi qualified for two quarterfinals as he ran 10.03 in the 100-meter dash for second overall behind Hinchliffe. Maswanganyi won his heat in the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.43 and entered Friday's quarterfinal with the third-fastest time in the event.
Junior Trey East III earned the final men's quarterfinal spot as he ran a new personal best of 45.89 in the 400-meters.
Freshman Aaron Crittenden made his NCAA West Preliminary Round debut as he competed in the 800-meters at 1:49.57 for the ninth fastest time in program history.

The Houston women open NCAA West Preliminary Round competition on Thursday at John McDonnell Field. Due to potential severe weather later Thursday evening, the NCAA has decided to move up running events by three hours.
Junior Miracle Thompson opens the day for the Cougars in the women's 100-meter hurdles at 3 p.m., and freshman Michaela Mouton and senior Iman Babineaux will compete in the 400-meter at 4 p.m.
Graduate Kelly-Ann Beckford will run the 800-meter at 4:50 p.m., followed by graduate Sydni Townsend in the 400-meter hurdles at 5:20 p.m. Mouton will close her day at 5:45 p.m. in the 200-meter. Graduate Claire Meyer will conclude the day for the Cougars in the 10,000-meter scheduled to begin at 6:10 p.m.
