PREVIEW: Track and Field Set to Honor Senior Class at Tom Tellez Invitational on Friday

Friday’s meet starts at 1 p.m., senior recognition begins at 4:15 p.m.
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Track and Field program hosts its final home meet of the season and celebrates senior day at the Tom Tellez Invitational at the Carl Lewis International Complex on Friday.

Field will begin at 1 p.m., and the senior recognition will take place at 4:15 p.m. Running events are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m., with an estimated end time of 8:30 p.m.

BIG 12 ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
For the first time in Houston Track & Field history, senior De'Vion Wilson was named the Big 12 Conference's Male Track Athlete of the Week after his 110-meter hurdles performance at Penn Relays on Saturday.
Â
Wilson ran a season-best time of 13.38 seconds to win his second consecutive title in the 110-meter hurdles behind the fifth-fastest time in meet history.

LAST TIME OUT
Cougars collected eight first place finishes with 16 podium finishes across two meets last weekend. At Penn Relays, the women's 4x400-meter relay of graduate Sydni Townsend, senior Iman Babineaux, graduate Kelly-Ann Beckford and freshman Michaela Mouton set the school record with their first-place time of 3:27.32, the sixth best time in the nation.

Sophomore sprinter Louie Hinchliffe won the men's 100-meter dash with his season-best time of 10.21. Senior sprinter Shaun Maswanganyi finished right behind Hinchliffe with his second-place time of 10.26.

Wilson won the men's 110-meter hurdles with a season-best and nation's sixth-best time of 13.38. This earned him the Big 12 Male Track Athlete of the Week, the first Big 12 Weekly Honor for the track and field program.

The men's 4x200-meter relay of senior Davonte Burnett, senior Ireon Brown, freshman Cayden Broadnax and Maswanganyi finished second, crossing the line at 1:22.42

Also finishing second was the men's 4x100-meter relay of Brown, Broadnax, Hinchliffe and Maswanganyi with their time of 39.35.

At the Texas Invitational, field events took the spotlight for the Cougars. Senior Christyan Sampy claimed first place in the pole vault with his school-record breaking clearance of 5.65 (18'-6.5) meters. Sampy's personal-best vault is also the fourth highest in the nation.

Cougars won on the men's and women's side of the javelin throw. Graduate Izac Canchola won with his throw of 69.08 (226'-8) meters while freshman Paris Kimble won with a personal-best throw of 44.13 (144'-9) meters, the fourth best in school history.

The men's high jump saw a 1-2 Houston finish with freshman Antrea Mita winning with a personal-best jump of 2.17 (7'-1.5) meters and junior My'Kell Beck earning second with his clearance of 2.09 (6'-10.25) meters.

Graduate Ethan Marshall claimed second place in the hammer throw with his mark of 63.35 (207'-10) meters.

In the men's discus, graduate Lusekelo Mwamukonda finished second overall with his throw of 55.46 (181'-11) meters.

Freshman Cordell Nwokeji finished third in the shot put with his throw of 18.74 *61'-5.75) meters.

On the track at the Texas Invitational, the men's 4x400-meter relay of juniors Trey East III, Dillon Leacock, Nakoah Witt and freshman Joshua Sims-Waddy won with their time of 3:11.73.

Freshman Aaron Crittenden finished third overall in the men's 800-meter with a time of 1:50.98.
