De La Fuente Leads Men’s Golf at NCAA Baton Rouge Regional

Senior fires 1-under 71 in Second Round to surge into Top-10 individual leaders; Cougars in seventh entering Final Round

The Guadalajara, Mexico, native rebounded from a challenging front nine that saw him fight through three bogeys with only one birdie.
Fortunately, De La Fuente used a steady back nine with three birdies, including back-to-back efforts at Nos. 17-18 on the 7,401-yard course at University Club to tie for 11th at even-par 144 through 36 holes.
As a team, the Cougars posted a score of 296 and slipped into seventh with a two-day total of 585, three strokes behind fifth place.
Junior Wolfgang Glawe was tied for 25th at 148 while super senior Austyn Reily was tied for 27th at 149. Making his NCAA postseason debut, freshman Grant Doggett was tied for 36th at 150 while junior Jacob Borow was tied for 52nd at 152.
Virginia held the team lead at 570 to finish five strokes in front of Auburn. Texas Tech (579), Duke (582) and Ohio State (583) completed the Top Five leaders with host LSU (584), Oregon (591), South Carolina (591) and Lipscomb rounding out the Top 10.
The NCAA Baton Rouge Regional concludes with the Final Round teeing off at 8 a.m., Wednesday. The top five teams and top individual not on a qualifying team at each NCAA Regional advance to the NCAA Championships set for Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif., on May 24-29.
Duke's Ethan Evans posted a 67 in the Second Round and held the individual lead at 138. Ohio State's Neal Shipley, LSU's Connor Gaunt and Virginia's Deven Patel were tied for second at 141 while Baard Skogen (Texas Tech) and Bryan Lee were tied for fifth at 142.
Auburn teammates Brendan Valdes and Josiah Gilbert, Adam Wallin (Ohio State) and Josh Duangmanee (Virginia) joined De La Fuente in the tie for 10th at even par.
This marks the 10th NCAA Regional in which the Cougars will compete under Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke, who is in his 15th season at Houston.

For Wednesday's Second Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Oregon and South Carolina beginning at 8:55 a.m.
Borow begins the day off No. 1 with Doggett (9:06 a.m.), Reily (9:17 a.m.), Glawe (9:28 a.m.) and De La Fuente (9:39 a.m.) following.

NCAA REGIONAL HISTORY
Houston Men's Golf is competing as a team in its 24th NCAA Regionals during the program's rich history with nine Top-Five team finishes.
Houston captured the team championship at the 1998 NCAA Central Regional at Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio, Texas while four Cougars (Michael Perras, 2016 NCAA Franklin Regional); Blair Hamilton (2016 NCAA Lubbock Regional), Brett Callas (2003 NCAA Central Regional) and Dean Larsson (1994 NCAA Central Regional) earned medalist honors at their respective events.
A year ago, the Cougars finished 11th at the NCAA Auburn Regional at Auburn University Club in Auburn, Ala. De La Fuente and Braxton Watkins tied for 36th at 224 to lead Houston.
Reily is competing in the fourth NCAA Regional of his Houston career with Borow playing in his third. De La Fuente teed off in NCAA Regional play for the fourth time in his career and his second with the Cougars while Glawe is competing in his second NCAA Regional. Doggett made his NCAA postseason debut.
