Junior Wolfgang Glawe tied for second with 68; Freshman Grant Doggett among Top-15 leaders

As a team, the ninth-seeded Cougars recorded nine bogeys with only two birdies through the first four holes of the day on the 7,401-yard, par-72 course. Fortunately, the team settled in with 18 birdies over the remaining 13 holes.
That included seven birdies through the first four holes of the back nine and five birdies over the final two holes.
The Cougars joined Ohio State in a tie for third at 289. Virginia held the first-day lead at 280 to finish five strokes ahead of Auburn. Duke (291), Texas Tech (292), Oregon (292), South Carolina (293), Lipscomb (294) and host LSU (295) completed the Top 10.
Individually, junior Wolfgang Glawe rallied from the team's slowest start to finish at 4-under 68 and was tied for second. Enduring back-to-back bogeys to open the round, the St. Leon-Rot, Germany, native drained his first birdie at the par-4 fourth hole and returned to even par with a birdie on the par-3 eighth hole.
He erupted on the back nine with three straight birdies and, following his lone bogey of the back nine at No. 16, closed the day with back-to-back birdies to join LSU's Connor Gaunt in a tie for second.
Houston continues the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional with 18 holes each day beginning at 8 a.m., Tuesday and Wednesday. The top five teams and top individual not on a qualifying team at each NCAA Regional advance to the NCAA Championships set for Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif., on May 24-29.
Making his NCAA postseason debut, freshman Grant Doggett was tied for 15th at even-par 72. After bogeying his first hole, the Beach City, Texas, native drained two birdies in a four-hole stretch at Nos. 3-7 and opened his back nine with a birdie at #10.
Doggett added his final birdie of the day at No. 17 to join six others at even par.
Senior and Big 12 Championships All-Tournament Team member Santiago De La Fuente overcame three bogeys in his first four holes to post a 73 and was tied for 22nd. The Guadalajara, Mexico, native closed the First Round with two birdies in his last three holes.
Competing in the fourth Regional of his Houston career, super senior Austyn Reily was tied for 44th at 76 while junior Jacob Borow was tied for 57th at 78.
Virginia's Deven Patel held the individual lead at 67. Neal Shipley (Ohio State), Jackson Koivun (Auburn), Bryan Lee (Virginia), Calum Scott (Texas Tech) and Josiah Gilbert (Auburn) were tied for fourth at 70.
