
Sampy, Women’s 4x400-Meter Relay Extend School Records to End Weekend

Eight first-place finishes, 11 personal bests lead Cougars to stellar day at Penn Relay and Texas Invitational
PHILADELPHIA, Pa., and AUSTIN, Texas –The women's 4x400-meter relay and senior Christyan Sampy set two school records as Houston concluded weekend action with eight first places at both Penn Relays and the Texas Invitational on Saturday.
PENN RELAYS
The women's 4x400-meter relay of graduate Sydni Townsend, senior Iman Babineaux, graduate Kelly-Ann Beckford and freshman Michaela Mouton won the Championship of America with a school-record time of 3:27.32, as they defeated their record just set on Friday. The relay now holds the eighth fastest 4x400-meter relay in Penn Relay history and the No. 4 time in the nation.
In the men's 100-meter dash, sophomore Louie Hinchliffe grabbed his first victory as a Cougar, winning the event with a time of 10.21. This marked Houston's 11th win in the 100-meter at Penn Relays. Senior Shaun Maswanganyi secured second at 10.26 for the 1-2 finish.
Senior hurdler De'Vion Wilson ran to first in the 110-meter hurdles with his time of 13.38, the fifth-fastest in Penn Relays history. Wilson is tied for No. 5 in the nation with his season-best mark.
The men's 4x100-meter relay of senior Ireon Brown, freshman Cayden Broadnax, Hinchliffe and Maswanganyi finished second in the Championship of America section with a time of 39.35.
TEXAS INVITATIONAL
The field events for the Cougars highlighted the Texas Invitational. Sampy won the pole vault with his personal best and school-record extending clearance of 5.65 (18'-6.5) meters. The senior now holds the No. 4 mark in the nation.
Freshman Paris Kimble won the women's javelin throw on her last attempt. Her throw of 44.13 (144'-9) meters set a personal best and moved her to No. 4 in the school record book.
In a similar last-ditch effort, graduate Izac Canchola threw the winning mark in the javelin in his last attempt, landing at 69.08 (226'-8) meters.
The men's high jump led to a Cougar 1-2 finish, with freshman Antrea Mita winning with a height of 2.17 (7'-1.5) meters and junior My'Kell Beck grabbing second with his clearance of 2.09 (6'-10.25) meters.
Graduate thrower Ethan Marshall finished second in the hammer throw with his throw of 63.35 (207'-10) meters.
Freshman thrower Cordell Nwokeji grabbed the last podium of the weekend with his third-place mark of 18.74 (61'-5.75) meters in the shot put.
On the track, the men's 4x400-meter relay followed the women's lead as they won their event. The relay team of juniors Trey East III, Dillon Leacock, Nakoah Witt and freshman Joshua Sims-Waddy finished with the top time at 3:11.73.
Freshman Aaron Crittenden finished third in the 800-meter with a time of 1:50.98.
UP NEXT
Cougars wrap up the regular season at home as they host Senior Day on Friday at the Tom Tellez Invitational at the Carl Lewis International Complex. Field events are scheduled to begin at noon, seniors will be recognized at 4:15 p.m., and running events start at 5 p.m.
Following the Tom Tellez Invitational, Houston will travel to Waco, Texas, for the Big 12 Outdoor Championships, May 9-11.
