Murray named Most Outstanding Player, program record nine Cougars make series team
HOUSTON – A program record nine Houston Cougars were named to the Silver Glove Series Team, announced Monday in a joint release with Rice with first baseman Justin Murray named the Most Outstanding Player of the series.
The Cougars swept Rice in the Silver Glove Series for the first time since 2014 after winning 4-1, 4-2 and 4-3 over the course of three midweek games.
Murray was named Most Outstanding Player after hitting .300 with three hits, an RBI and recorded a save on the mound.
Third baseman Thomas Lyssy led the Cougars among qualified hitters in batting average with a .429 clip and three hits, including a double. Lyssy was one of five Cougars with three hits along with Murray and second baseman Harold Coll, wild card Anthony Tulimero and outfielder Cary Arbolida. Tulimero, who was named the series "Wild Card" played in just one game after returning from an injury but went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Arbolida went 3 for 4 with a pair of hit by pitches in his two games played.
Fellow outfielder Tristan Moore was one of two Cougars to hit a home run in the series, a solo homer in game three of the series.
Catcher Jonathan French drove in a run with one hit in the series while not committing an error and saved his pitchers by only allowing four wild pitches.
Pitchers Cade Citelli, Chris Stuart and Michael Benzor all made the team after superb outings against the Owls.
Citelli wowed in his lone start and appearance, striking out seven Owls over 4.0 innings of one-hit, two-walk work on the mound.
Stuart had one of his most impressive outings of the season in the opener of the series by striking out five in 4.0 innings of relief work, earning the win. Stuart and Citelli combined for 12 strikeouts and scattered two hits in their combined 8.0 innings of the series opener.
Stuart also pitched an inning in the finale in which he struck out two Owls and allowed a hit.
Murray, who hit, played first base and pitched in the series, earned his second save of the season in the first game by striking out a pair while not allowing a base runner.
Benzor made two appearances in the series, tossing 0.2 innings in his first outing in game two of the series before pitching a then-career high 2.2 innings of no-hit work in the series finale. Benzor struck out two Owls in his second appearance and did not allow a hit in his 3.1 innings in relief.
