Texas surges for five runs in first inning to even the series

HOUSTON – The University of Houston Softball team dropped its first game of Big 12 Conference play in a 9-2 loss to #2/#1 Texas on Saturday afternoon at Cougar Softball Stadium.

Tamya Waiters (3-3) earned the loss for the Cougars (17-6, 1-1 Big 12). Teagan Kavan (9-0) spun a complete-game victory for Texas (20-2, 1-1 Big 12), allowing two earned runs on four hits.

Key Innings
1st | Texas established a lead in the top of the first. Kayden Henry used a leadoff double to reach base, stole third and scored on a throwing error to put the Longhorns ahead 1-0. The next two batters reached and advanced to third on a fly out and Mia Scott scored on a single from Katie Cimusz. Texas capped the inning with a three run home run to go up by five after the first.

3rd | A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases for Houston in the third. Coleman put the Cougars on the board by forcing home a run on a hit-by-pitch while another came around to score on a single from graduate Shelby Smith to cut the deficit to three.

7th | After hitting a two-run homer in the fourth, Texas added two more insurance runs with another two-run home run off the bat of Alyssa Washington to seal a 9-2 win.
