Iowa State overcomes Houston’s hot start to sweep Friday doubleheader
AMES, Iowa – -/rv University of Houston Softball jumped out to an early four-run lead but could not slow Iowa State down the stretch as the Cyclones used a five-run third inning to defeat the Cougars, 9-4 and earn the doubleheader sweep Friday evening at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
Houston graduate Jazmyn Rollin clubbed a two-run home run – her fifth of the season – to highlight a three-run first inning by Houston (17-9, 1-4 Big 12). Iowa State (11-14, 2-3 Big 12) plated the game's final nine runs including using six hits to produce five runs in the third.
Cougar redshirt sophomore Paris Lehman (4-2) allowed five runs on eight hits in 3.0 innings during the start. Iowa State freshman starter Aziza Rodriguez (3-4) permitted four runs on as many hits in 5.0 innings. Sophomore Jaiden Ralston tossed 2.0 scoreless frames in relief.

1st | Houston wasted no time taking the early lead, doing so two batters into the game as graduate Kennedy Thomas clubbed an RBI-double into right field. The Cougars plated three runs before recording an out highlighted by graduate Jazmyn Rollin's two-run home run – her fifth long ball of the season.
3rd | Houston graduate Bree Cantu swatted a run-scoring double into center field, plating Thomas all the way from first (leadoff walk) but Iowa State sent nine to the plate in the home half, scoring five times on six hits to take a 5-4 lead. The Cyclones produced six straight hits with two outs including three consecutive doubles with sophomore McKenna Andrews logging the go-ahead two-bagger.
4th | After the Cougars were retired in order, the Cyclones capitalized on a one-out walk with junior Angelina Allen swatting a run-scoring double into left center. On for the fourth, Cougar graduate reliever Taylor Edwards settled down, stranding two aboard.
5th | The Cougars put together a much needed shutdown frame in the home half of the fifth highlighted by a diving grab from junior Ja'Naiya Thomas in left field.
6th | Iowa State added insurance in the sixth inning, tacking on three runs. The Cyclones sent seven batters to the plate, producing four hits.
