Houston splits three time zones as they compete in Houston, Boston and Albuquerque
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Track and Field program will compete in three different time zones as it hosts the Howie Ryan Invitational on Friday inside Yeoman Fieldhouse, travels to the David Hemery Valentine in Boston, Mass., and closes out the weekend by competing Friday and Saturday at the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.
At the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, three student-athletes will compete for Houston on Friday. Graduate Kelly-Ann Beckford will compete in the 800-meter at 10:05 a.m. CT, graduate Sydni Townsend will run in the 400-meter at 11:40 a.m. CT and graduate distance runner Claire Meyer closes out action in the 5000-meter at 7:25 p.m. CT.
Four Cougars will compete at the Don Kirby Invitational on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, graduate Christyan Sampy and senior Grant Levesque will compete in the pole vault and long jump.
On Saturday, graduate hurdler De'Vion Wilson will run in the men's 60-meter hurdles, followed by finals at 1:25 p.m. CT. Junior hurdler Miracle Thompson will also represent Houston in the women's 60-meter hurdles at 1 p.m. CT, followed by finals at 1:30 p.m. CT.
LAST TIME OUT
Last weekend at the Charlie Thomas Invitational in College Station, Texas, three Cougars won their events and 11 had a Top-Three finish.
Sampy broke his previous school record in the pole vault with his height of 5.55 meters to move him to No. 5 in the nation. In the men's 60-meter hurdles, Wilson placed first at 7.72, while Levesque came in second with his personal best time of 7.89, which moved him to No. 7 in school history.
Senior sprinter Shaun Maswanganyi finished first in the 200-meter dash with an indoor personal time of 20.64, ranking him No. 9 in the nation.
The women's 4x400-meter relay, consisting of senior Iman Babineaux, graduate Sydni Townsend, graduate Kelly-Ann Beckford and freshman Michaela Mouton, tied the school record with their time of 3:32.28 and set them as the No. 10 time in the country.
ALL EYES ON SHAUN
Spectators must enter through the front door of the Athletics/Alumni Center. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children (ages 3-12). Children under 2 are free but must sit in the lap of a parent or guardian and may not occupy a seat or obstruct the sight lines of other guests. Groups of 10 or more may purchase tickets for $5 per person.

- Maswanganyi was named to the 2024 Men's Preseason Watch List for The Bowerman, the USTFCCCA announced on Jan. 9, 2024.
- At the Charlie Thomas Invitational, Maswanganyi won the 200-meter dash with the nation's No. 9 time at 20.64, an indoor personal best for the All-American.
- Maswanganyi finished first in the 60-meter with a time of 6.65 at the Ted Nelson Invitational, a time good enough to land him No. 25 in the nation.
- The 10-time NCAA All-American is making his career Watch List debut and is the fourth Houston man to make the Watch List, joining Cameron Burrell (2017, 2018), Elijah Hall (2018) and Kahmari Montgomery (2019).
- In 2023, Maswanganyi earned All-America First-Team honors in the 60-meter dash, 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. The senior set the school record in the 100-meter dash at the 2023 NCAA Championships with a time of 9.91.
- At Houston's final American Athletic Conference Championships, Maswanganyi won the Most Valuable Performance award, claiming titles in the 200-meter and 60-meter dash.
- At the Outdoor Conference Championships, Maswanganyi earned first place in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and ran the anchor leg of Houston's ninth-consecutive 400-meter relay title.
