Sampy Breaks School Record, Cougars Wrap Action at Charlie Thomas Invitational

Houston closes weekend with three first-place finishes
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The University of Houston Track and Field program finished out the Charlie Thomas Invitational with three first-place finishes, 11 podium placements, 18 personal bests and two indoor school record marks at the R.A. "Murray" Fasken '38 Indoor Track on Saturday.
The day began with graduate Ethan Marshall placing second in the weight throw with a distance of 19.92 meters. This mark moved Marshall up the indoor school record book once again to the No. 2 spot. Graduate Lusekelo Mwamukonda finished in third in the weight throw with a throw of 17.77 meters, moving him up to No. 5 in indoor school history.
In the men's shot put, freshman Cordell Nwokeji finished in second place with a throw of 17.26 meters.
Graduate Christyan Sampy broke his personal best, raising the pole vault indoor school record with a height of 5.55 meters (18-2 1/2). His mark also vaulted him to No. 5 in the nation for the 2024 indoor season.
Senior David Ajama wrapped up field action in the triple jump with a third-place finish at 15.56 meters.
In the running events, senior hurdler De'Vion Wilson won the men's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.72. Coming in second place was senior Grant Levesque, who finished with a time of 7.89. In the prelims, Levesque ran 7.81 in the 60-meter hurdles to set a personal best and move himself to No. 7 in school history.
Senior sprinter Shaun Maswanganyi ran to first place in the 200-meter with a new indoor personal best time of 20.64 to rank No. 9 in the nation. This marks Maswanganyi's second first-place finish in the 2024 indoor season, the first being in the 60-meter at the Ted Nelson Invitational.
Graduate Claire Meyer crossed the line third in the mile with a time of 4:51.57, a new personal best and is now No. 4 in school history.
Junior hurdler Miracle Thompson finished second in the women's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.27.
To conclude the meet, the women's 4x400-meter relay consisting of senior Iman Babineaux, graduate Sydni Townsend, graduate Kelly-Ann Beckford and freshman anchor leg Michaela Mouton matched the indoor school record with a time of 3:32.28 to finish in second, a time previously set in 2006. This moved the squad to No. 10 in the nation.

The track and field program will be split across three time zones, with Houston hosting the Howie Ryan Invitational on Friday and will compete both Friday and Saturday at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston, Mass., and the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.
