Cougars Climb Leaderboard Led By Abelar at The Chevron Collegiate

Women’s Golf surges five spots during Final Round, takes sixth at Golf Club of Houston
HUMBLE, Texas – University of Houston senior Nicole Abelar notched her fourth Top 25 result of the 2023-24 season, finishing tied for 13th after firing an 8-under, 208, to lead the Cougars at the conclusion of The Chevron Collegiate at Golf Club of Houston on Tuesday afternoon.
The Cougars climbed a tournament-best five spots up the leaderboard during the final 18 holes, finishing sixth among the 16-team field at 14-under, 850. Houston's Final Round 281 was bested only by tournament-champion SMU (278) and Texas State (280).
Abelar, who sunk a hole-in-one on No. 7 during her Second Round Monday, drained six birdies Tuesday with three on the final four holes.
After matching the school record behind a bogey-free 64 during the First Round on Monday, junior Hyeonji Kang carded a Second Round 74 and Final Round 71 to finish in a three-way tie for 17th at 7-under, 209. The Jeju, South Korea, native's finisher was her highest of the season and best since taking second at the Cowgirl Classic (April 3-4, 2023) at Hawai'i. Kang followed up an even-par Front 9 with a 1-under Back 9.
Sophomore Moa Svedenskiold made the third-largest jump up the leaderboard Tuesday, climbing 22 spots thanks to a 3-under, 69, to finish tied for 43rd. The Halmstad, Sweden, native tapped in five birdies while carding the fifth-lowest Final Round score among the 89-member field.
Freshman Maelynn Kim jumped 10 spots up the leaderboard to finish tied for 55th at 220. Alexa Saldana finished 75th at 225.
Competing as individuals, freshman Ellen Yates finished 63rd with a score of 222 followed closely by sophomore Natalie Saint Germain in 67th at 223. Juniors Brooke Morales and Anna Economon finished 81st (228) and 88th (257), respectively.
SMU earned top team honors at 33-under, 831, helped by three Top 12 finishers. Maryland (835), Texas A&M (840), Texas State (847) and Texas Tech (848) rounded out the Top 5. Illinois senior Isabel Sy and Maryland sophomore Nicha Kanpai were co-individual champions at 12-under, 204. Furman fifth-year Anna Morgan (205), SMU senior Ellie Szeryk (206) and Maryland senior Patricie Mackova (206) rounded out the Top 5.
