Houston Football boasts 75 alumni in high school ranks
HOUSTON – The University of Houston's impact on the game of Football can be measured in many ways. Arguably its most telling impact, however, is how its former student-athletes are using their experiences on the field to tutor the next generation of competitors.
On Tuesday, Houston alumnus Tyrone Green was promoted from Assistant Head Coach to Head Coach at Shadow Creek High School, becoming the ninth Cougar actively at the helm of a high school football program – including eight in the state of Texas.
Green began his coaching career at Houston Lamar High School in 2003 following a four-year playing career at the University of Houston. He has been with Shadow Creek since July 2016.
"I coach because the coaches I had in my life were instrumental in helping to mold me into the man I am today," Green told HoustonTexans.com in an interview last September. "So, I wanted to give back at the high school level where I can help guide kids in the right direction and try to be a positive role model they can count on."
More than 75 Houston Football alumni are now high school football coaches including nearly 10% who are Head Coaches. In fact, 11 high schools around the state boast multiple Cougars on staff with none more so than Shadow Creek.
During 2023-24, four of Shadow Creek's 16 varsity head coaches were Houston alums – (Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Line) Green, Offensive Coordinator/Receivers Coach Rene Glapion, Offensive Line/Strength & Conditioning Coach Al James and Running Backs/Special Teams Coach Demetrius Woods. Greene, James and Woods competed for the Cougars while Glapion worked as an Equipment Manager and intern with the program. Competing in Class 6A, the Sharks followed up an 11-1 season in 2022 with a 9-2 mark this past season.
Cedric Hardeman, who lettered with the Cougars as a defensive back from 1996-98, became the 23rd head coach in Conroe Football history in December 2017. In 2021, Conroe reached the playoffs for the first time in nine years. In 2022, it notched a winning record for the first time since 2008 and a return trip to the playoffs. In 2023, the program reached the playoffs for a third straight season – something that hadn't been accomplished since 2007-09.
Three Cougars are on staff at La Porte High School including Offensive Coordinator Keith Whitely, Defensive Coordinator Marcus McGraw and Assistant Football/Assistant Basketball Coach Philip Causey. While playing at a host of different stadiums was theirs was rebuilt in 2023, La Porte went on to win the District 8-5A Championship – its first district title since 2016.
High schools with multiple Cougars on coaching staffs include Cy-Fair, Elkins, Fort Bend Marshall, Iowa Colony, Katy Jordan, Kinkaid, La Porte, Pasadena Memorial, River Oaks Baptist, Shadow Creek and Texas City.
In addition to Green (Shadow Creek) and Hardeman (Conroe), Cougar alums leading high school football programs include Trey Herrmann (Fort Bend Austin), Allen Aldridge (George Bush), Stephen Dixon, Sr. (Heights), Phillip Steward (Marana; Tucson, Ariz.), Willie Gaston (North Shore), Sterling Doty (Stephenville) and Rafe Mata (West Rusk).
