Defensive back’s two interceptions, seven tackles lead to first league award
HOUSTON – University of Houston defensive back A.J. Haulcy's two interceptions and team-leading seven tackles in the Cougars 30-19 win at TCU on Friday led him to being named Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
The Houston native is one of 22 players nationally and three Big 12 players with 2 interceptions in a game. He is joined by Trey Rucker (Oklahoma State vs. Utah on Sept. 21) as the only players to accomplish the feat in a Big 12 game this season.
Haulcy's efforts helped limit TCU to 299 yards of total offense – its fewest in a home game since Nov. 29, 2019 – and 19 points – its fewest at home since Oct. 23, 2021. TCU did not convert a third down until 11:55 remaining in the contest.
The team's career-leader in tackles, whose three interceptions on the season are tied for the Big 12 lead, allowed just one reception in four targets against the Horned Frogs, and did not permit any yards after catch. Haulcy added three passes defended (breakups + INTs), upping his Big 12 best to eight this season.
Haulcy was also honored by Pro Football Focus on their Week 6 National Team of the Week on Sunday.
The Defensive Player of the Week award for Haulcy marks the Cougars first Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honor in program history.
