
Men’s Golf Finishes First Round at Southwestern Invitational

Senior Santiago De La Fuente tied for fourth with 67 at North Ranch Country Club
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. – University of Houston senior Santiago De La Fuente stood among the Top-10 leaders with a 67 following the First Round of the Southwestern Invitational at North Ranch Country Club on Monday afternoon.
Starting off No. 10, De La Fuente quickly moved into red numbers with an eagle-3 on the par-15 12th hole but gave a stroke back with a bogey at No. 13.
Following a par at No. 14, the Guadalajara, Mexico, native drained three birdies in a four-hole stretch at Nos. 15-18 and added his final birdie of the day at No. 7 to finish with a 67 on the 6,800-yard, par-71 course.
As a team, the Cougars stood in 13th with a score of 291.
Super senior Austyn Reily was tied for 43rd at 73 while junior Wolfgang Glawe and sophomore Ruben Lindsay were tied for 61st at 75. Making his Houston debut in stroke play, freshman Chi Chun Chen was tied for 70th at 77. Competing as an individual, sophomore Bryant Hiskey II was tied for 74th at 80.
Texas Tech stood atop the team leaderboard after 18 holes with a score of 277. USC was second at 278 while UNLV (279), UCLA (280), California (281), Pepperdine (284), Wake Forest (284), San Diego State (285), Ohio State (285) and Washington (286) completed the Top 10.
UNLV's Caden Fioroni held the first-day lead with a 62. Tyran Sanders (Texas Tech), Nicolas Dominguez (USC) and Aaron Du (California) were tied for second at 66 while De La Fuente joined Luke Powell (UCLA) and Antonio Safa (USC) in a tie for fifth
The tournament continues with the Second Round beginning with a 10 a.m. (CST) split-tee start Tuesday and concludes with the Final Round on Wednesday.

Following the Southwestern Invitational, the Cougars return to the Lone Star State to play host to the Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas on Feb. 19-20.
From there, Houston will tee off at the Cabo Collegiate at Twin Dolphin Club in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, on March 3-5 before returning home to play host to the All-American Intercollegiate on March 18-19 at Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas.
