Cougars Raise Bar with 3.21 Term GPA During Fall 2023

Eleven of 15 programs post 3.0 GPA or higher to highlight successes
HOUSTON – University of Houston's 400+ student-athletes continued to shine in the classroom during fall 2023, posting a 3.21 term grade point average (GPA) with 11 of its 15 programs notching a 3.0 or higher.
The term GPA is up from 2.91 during fall 2022. Thirteen Cougars posted perfect 4.0 GPAs during the department's first season of Big 12 Conference competition. A total of 119 student-athletes were named to the Dean's List which recognizes individuals with a 3.5 GPA or higher.
In total, 236 student-athletes logged GPAs at or above 3.0 while 16 student-athletes earned their degrees. The Cougars were led by Men's Golf and Swimming & Diving which registered a 3.53 and 3.50 GPA, respectively. Fourteen Men's Golfers – 93% of the team – and 28 swimmers/divers, or 88% of the team, posted 3.0+ GPAs.
"Our student-athletes exemplify the true essence of dedication and balance, excelling not only in their respective sport but also in their academic pursuits, proving that commitment knows no bounds," Senior Associate Athletics Director for Academic Services Dr. Cliff Harrell said. "Our dedicated academic staff is proud of the success our student-athletes have achieved."
Women's Cross Country earned a 3.49 GPA backed by three perfect 4.0 GPAs and another 18 of 3.0 or higher (also included Women's Track and Field). The team was followed closely behind by Women's Golf (3.48), Tennis (3.45) and Volleyball (3.39). Eight Women's Golfers, nearly 90% of the team, exceeded the 3.0 mark including five above 3.5.
Seven Tennis student-athletes (88% of roster) maintained a 3.0+ GPA as did 18 Volleyball student-athletes or 90% of the roster. Soccer continued its high marks in the classroom. The team posted a 3.38 term GPA and boasted a 3.49 cumulative GPA as a whopping 29 student-athletes – or 85% of the roster – scored 3.0 term GPAs or higher.
Men's Cross Country and Baseball took home the second and third highest GPAs among men's sports at 3.27 and 3.13 respectively. Twenty-three Baseball student-athletes exceeded the 3.0 mark as did 30 Men's Cross Country/Track and Field student-athletes. Women's Track and Field also earned a 3.05 GPA with an 18 GPAs of 3.0 or higher.
