
Tennis Sweeps Singles Matches on Day One of Houston Invite

Cougars earn five doubles and eight singles victories on day one
HOUSTON, Texas – The University of Houston tennis team dominated day one of the Houston Invite, earning five doubles and eight singles victories on Friday at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility.
Houston commenced the day winning three of its four doubles matches. Elena Trencheva and Gabriela Cortes teamed up to defeat UT Arlington's Bruna Casasampere and Niva Novikova, 6-2.
Sonya Kovalenko and Maria Dzemeshkevich defeated the Mavericks' Sarina Reinertsen and Francisca Veraga, 6-2, while Sophie Schouten and Laura Slisane earned the final win in the first round of doubles by besting UT Arlington's Tara Gorinsek and Ana Paula Jimenez, 6-3.
The Cougars garnered two additional doubles victories in the second round when Trencheva and Cortes beat Air Force's Carissa Holguin and Joselyn Limbago, 6-2. Schouten and Kovalenko teamed up to defeat Rice's Divna Ratkovic and Saara Orav, 7-5.
Houston swept the competition in singles as all eight Cougars earned a win. Kovalenko defeated Air Force's Alexis Odom, 6-3, 6-4. Schouten defeated Nadia Kojonroj of Air Force, 6-2, 2-6, 10-2. Dzemeshkevich beat Air Force's Isabella Flodin in a three-set match, 6-7(3), 6-1, 10-2.
Nina Skoric made her singles debut with a win against UT Arlington's Novikova in a thriller, 5-7, 6-3, 10-2. Cortes took care of business against Air Force's Giovanna Sanchirico 6-0, 6-3, while Slisane knocked off Limbargo, 6-2, 6-0.
Trencheva didn't allow a point against Holguin, winning both sets 6-0, and Blanca Cortijo Parreno defeated Air Force's Amy Park, 6-1, 6-0.
The Houston Invite resumes on Saturday with first serve beginning at 10 a.m., at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility. Fans can attend free of charge and no student ticket claim will be necessary.
