98-yard kick return touchdown earns Golden first Big 12 weekly honor
HOUSTON – University of Houston wide receiver Matthew Golden registered the program's first Big 12 Conference weekly award by being named Special Teams Player of the Week, announced by the league on Monday.
Golden, who returned a second quarter kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown against TCU on Saturday, finished the game with 132 yards of kick return yardage on three returns and had four receptions for 56 yards.
The 98-yard kick return touchdown was the longest play for the Cougars in the young season and was the first kickoff return TD by a Cougar since Jayce Rogers' 100-yard return at Memphis (Oct. 7, 2022).
The kick return TD was the sophomore's first-career special teams touchdown and Houston's nation-leading seventh since 2019. It was the 19th special teams touchdown for the Cougars since 2008, which is tied for second nationally (San Diego State), and the 30th in the history of the program.
