Cougar wide receiver set program’s true freshman receiving touchdowns record a season ago
HOUSTON – University of Houston sophomore wide receiver Matthew Golden has been named to the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List, honoring the top offensive player in Division I football who was born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or currently playing at Texas D1 four-year college.
The award also recognizes individuals based on integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically, tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.
The preseason honor is the latest for Golden who was named Athlon Sports Preseason All-Big 12 Conference First Team and was recognized on the Maxwell Award Preseason Watch List. The Klein Cain High School product played in 11 games (eight starts) a season ago, finishing second on the team with 700 all-purpose yards. He hauled in 38 receptions for 584 yards. His seven receiving scores ranked second among all true freshmen nationally.
The watch list will be narrowed to no more than 16 semifinalists in November and up to five finalists in December. Honorees will be selected by broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans and previous winners. The finalists will converge on Tyler, Texas, for The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Banquet scheduled for January 10, 2024.
