Houston plays home tournament, two road tourneys in its out-of-league slate
HOUSTON – University of Houston Volleyball Head Coach David Rehr announced the team's non-conference slate for the upcoming 2023 campaign. The Cougars play a home tournament in addition to two road tourneys prior to kicking off its first Big 12 Conference schedule on Sept. 20.Â
Â
The non-conference slate features two NCAA tourney teams with the potential of a third and a 2022 record of 159-94.Â
Â
The team opens the year inside the confines of the Fertitta Center playing three matches in three days starting with USC on Aug. 25. AÂ six-seed in the 2022 NCAA Tournament, USC battles Houston to kick off each team's 2023 schedule. The Cougars conclude the weekend at home with a Saturday match against Southern Mississippi and a Sunday battle against McNeese.
Â
The following weekend, Houston heads to San Marcos for a tournament at Texas State. The Cougars play North Texas on Friday, Sept. 1, before matching up with Texas State on Saturday. Rehr's squad then travels to West Lafayette, Indiana for a tournament at Purdue. The team starts the weekend on Sept. 8 against Kentucky, a 2022 NCAA Tournament host who also reached the Sweet Sixteen. Based on the results of the opening matches that weekend, the team will then face off against SMU or Purdue on Saturday.Â
Â
The Cougars wrap up their non-conference slate in College Station, Texas, for a midweek pairing at Texas A&M. The team meets the Aggies on the court on Wednesday, Sept. 13, and follow it up with a meeting against Liberty on Thursday.Â
Â
Following the Thursday matchup against the Flames, Houston moves into its Big 12 slate the following Wednesday, Sept. 20, on the road at BYU.
