Senior sneaks into final of 400-meter hurdles with time qualifier
AUSTIN, Texas – Houston track and field's lone female competitor at the NCAA Championships, senior Sydni Townsend, advanced in the 400-meter hurdles on Thursday night and is the first Cougar to advance to the final of the 400 hurdles since assistant coach Sandra Glover in 1991.
Townsend had to wait a long time to race in the semifinal of the 400 hurdles. The event was delayed from its 9:30 p.m. scheduled start due to the meet running behind and then had to wait through a warning and disqualification to a competitor after getting set in the blocks twice.
The senior made up some ground halfway through the race, coming up to the final two hurdles in fourth place. Townsend moved into third place and crossed the finish line in 55.95 seconds.
The Philadelphia, Pa., native posted the seventh-fastest semifinal time of the night and grabbed the second time-qualifying position.
UP NEXT
Townsend will compete on Saturday in the 400-meter hurdles final at 9:27 p.m. Juniors Shaun Maswanganyi and De'Vion Wilson will compete in the final of their respective events on Friday night beginning with Wilson's 110-meter hurdle final at 8:42 p.m.
