Freshman pitcher Paul Schmitz earns Perfect Game postseason honors
HOUSTON – Following a standout introductory season with University of Houston Baseball, freshman right-handed pitcher Paul Schmitz has been named to the 2023 Perfect Game Freshman All-America Second Team. Â
Schmitz (1-3, 3.70 ERA) earned his place in the weekend starting rotation after a 6.2 inning outing against Big Ten opponent Minnesota. In what was his first start for the Cougars, Schmitz allowed only two runs with no walks and a career-high seven strikeouts.
Â
He followed it up with another 6.2 inning appearance against Northwestern, fanning a career-high eight batters and securing his first collegiate win. Due to injury, Schmitz would not pitch for over a month and a half before closing out his freshman campaign with two one-hit shutout appearances.
Â
In 12 appearances, including seven starts, Schmitz limited opponents to a .209 batting average including just nine extra-base hits in 41.1 innings.
Â
The Bonn, Germany, native was one of only two players from the American Athletic Conference to earn All-Freshman honors and the only pitcher. Among current or future Big 12 Conference schools, the 6-foot-8 righty was one of four players to receive the honor and one of two pitchers. Â
Â
The announcement comes one day after utility standout Justin Murray was recognized by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) as a Third-Team All-American after leading the Cougars with a .379 average and 58 RBIs.
