Houston student-athletes notch department-best 3.03 GPA during 2022-23
HOUSTON – University of Houston student-athletes combined to record a 3.03 GPA during 2022-23, the highest mark in school history, as part of a benchmark year for the department with 65 earning degrees and a record 44 posting perfect 4.0 GPAs.
The Cougars followed a 2.91 fall GPA with a 2.96 GPA in the spring. Each mark is among the best recorded across the last five years. The record-setting 3.03 total does not factor in semesters in which a university interim grading policy was in place (spring 2020, fall 2020, spring 2021).
Houston's 400+ student-athletes also set records for hours passed, clocking in at 93.53% in the fall and 94.6% in the spring, besting the previous marks of 91.82% (fall 2021) and 90% (spring 2022), respectively.
"We're extremely proud of our student-athletes and the advances they're making in the classroom," Houston Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman said. "Managing their academic course load and the expectation of competing at the highest level is no small feat. They've embraced that challenge and because of that are re-setting department records. It's a credit to their hard work as well as top-notch support from our academic staff, coaches and programs."
In total, 19 student-athletes recorded perfect 4.0 GPAs during the spring – the highest total since spring 2020 – and 25 notched perfect scores in the fall, marking the most since totaling 22 during fall 2021. The fall also saw 109 student-athletes named to the Dean's List – the most in three years.
Eleven (11) sport programs recorded a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the spring with Women's Golf's 3.77 leading the way. Men's Golf finished with a 3.26 semester to lead all men's programs.
