Cougars play for the series win on Sunday
HOUSTON – The University of Houston softball team suffered a 8-0, five-inning setback against South Florida on Saturday at Cougar Softball Stadium.
Payton Dixon (13-6) tossed a five-inning no hitter for South Florida (31-23, 10-7), walking three and issuing a hit-by-pitch in the complete-game victory. Hannah Blincoe (2-4) picked up the loss for Houston (20-29, 7-10), tossing two innings and allowing one hit.
While Houston would get a runner into scoring position in the second, South Florida ultimately took the lead first in the third inning, loading the bases on three walks and plating a run on a wild pitch. The Bulls scored another on a ground out, and Vivian Ponn hit a two-run homer to left-center to put USF up by four.
The Bulls rallied again in the fifth. Marissa Trivelpiece doubled home a run to start the scoring and Camille Ortiz-Martinez hit a three-run homer in the next at bat to cap the scoring at 8-0.
The result, paired with Tulsa's win over East Carolina, lock the Cougars in as the five-seed in the American Athletic Conference Tournament next week in Tampa, Fla.
UP NEXT
Houston closes out the regular season at noon Sunday with its series finale against South Florida. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
