Extra-inning thriller clinches season-long series against Rice
Houston pushed across three runs in the top of the 12th inning, leading to an 8-5 victory and second consecutive Silver Glove Series against Rice on Wednesday night across town at Reckling Park
After two scoreless extra innings, Houston (26-19) plated three runs in the top of the 12th inning. Junior outfielder Cary Arbolida drew a pinch-hit walk to get Houston on base. Junior catcher Anthony Tulimero followed it up by reaching on a catcher's interference to push Arbolida to second base. Murray registered a single to left field to bring in the go-ahead runner before sophomore outfielder Cameron Nickens laced another single to right field to allow Tulimero to slide across home plate for a 7-5 score.
With Rice's (17-27) Tom Vincent attempting a pick off, junior utility player Justin Murray stole home pushing the Cougars to an 8-5 lead. An Owls double started the bottom of the ninth before junior reliever Owen Woodward struck out the side to close the game.

Sophomore reliever Kyle Ayers (2-1) secured the win for the Cougars pitching two clean innings while Woodward notched his fourth save of the season pitching one inning with one hit and three strikeouts. Rice's Tom Vincent (1-3) took the loss throwing 0.2 innings allowing three runs.
Game Highlights:
- By clinching the series, head coach Todd Whitting has now won the Silver Glove Series five times while being the head coach at Houston. The Cougars won the series a season ago, taking 2 of 3 games against the Owls.
- Zach Arnold extended his reached-base streaks to 41 straight games. He has reached base in every single game he has played in this season while notching a 14-game hit streak that started in the final game at Wichita State.
- With 16 hits in the game, the Cougars have recorded 21 games this season with 10+ hits including eight of the last 10 games. Â
- The Cougars now hold a 5-0 record during extra-inning games. The 12-inning game was the second longest this season.
- Houston held Rice to a .118 (2-17) clip with runners in scoring position and stranded 14 Owls batters.
- With 10 hits in the game, the Cougars have recorded 25 games this season with 10+ hits including the last four.

1st | A bases-loaded walk gave Houston the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. Tulimero he drew a four-ball walk to allow senior outfielder Brandon Uhse to walk home. The Cougars tacked on another run as junior third baseman Zach Arnold came home on a wild pitch to give Houston a 2-0 lead. However, the Owls immediately answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 2-2.

4th | Houston struck again in the top of the fourth as graduate transfer Drew Bianco doubled down the left line with freshman Thomas Lyssy coming home for a 3-2 lead. The Cougars tacked on another run as Arnold singled to the shortstop giving Bianco the opportunity to get home for a 4-2 advantage. In the bottom half inning, the Owls brought the game within one run sending a ball over the fence to make the score 4-3.

6th | After Rice evened the score to 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth, Houston again brought a runner home on a wild pitch. Senior shortstop Ian McMillan led the inning off with a walk before Bianco got on base on a hit by pitch. Both runners advanced on a ground out before McMillan slid across the plate on a wild pitch for a 5-4 score.

9th | The Cougars nearly avoided a Rice walk-off as the Owls loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning. A fielders choice brought the tying run across with two outs before junior utility player Justin Murray struck out the final batter of the inning to send the game into extra innings.

12th | Houston commanded the top of the 12th inning bringing home three runs to forge ahead 8-5 before Woodward earned the save by striking out the final three batters in the bottom of the inning.

UP NEXT
The Cougars will battle Wichita State at Schroeder Park for the top spot in the American Athletic Conference. Both teams have a 10-5 conference record with Houston holding the tie breaker winning the series against the Shockers earlier in the season. The first contest of the three-game set in slated for Friday with first pitch at 6:30 p.m.
