
Female Trio Advance to Quarterfinals

Tamayo-Garza advances in 100-, 200-meter dashes, hurdlers advance in 100-, 400 hurdles
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Three Houston track and field athletes advanced in four different events to the quarterfinals to be held on Saturday at the NCAA West Preliminary Round on Thursday at Sacramento State.
In the first track event of the day, sophomore Destiny Smith showed her poise in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing second in her heat with a time of 13.20 to advance to Saturday via an automatic qualifier.
Senior Cecilia Tamayo-Garza had a strong finish in the 100-meter dash, using a big second-half surge over the final 50 meters to cross the finish line third in her heat. Tamayo-Garza then automatically qualified in the 200-meter dash later in the night. The Mexican record holder finished third in her heat in 23.23 for her second automatic qualifier of the night.
The third-fastest 400-meter hurdle time of the day came from senior Sydni Townsend. The senior won her heat in 56.75 for an automatic bid to the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Two female throwers had their collegiate careers come to a close on Thursday as graduate Priscilla Adejokun and Nu'uausala Tuilefano finished their careers in the hammer throw and shot put, respectively. Adejokun threw the hammer 60.18 meters and finished 24th overall, while Tuilefano posted a 15.23-meter throw on her third attempt.
Sophomore Daisy Monie did not post a mark in the shot put.

The men that advanced on Wednesday will aim to be inside the top 12 of the quarterfinal rounds on Friday for a ticket to the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas June 7-10. The men's 1,600-meter relay will also compete at the end of the night on Friday. Smith, Tamayo-Garza and Townsend, along with the 1,600-meter relay squad and a pair of field event athletes will compete for the women on Saturday.
