Houston sends 23 to NCAA West Preliminary Round, sights on Austin, NCAA Championships
HOUSTON – The University of Houston track and field team enters NCAA competition Wednesday-Saturday at the NCAA West Preliminary Round in Sacramento, Calif. The Cougars are taking 20-plus student-athletes to the West Preliminary Round for the sixth-straight season.

STARTING LINE NOTES
- Competition alternates, men-women-men-women beginning on Wednesday with the men and Thursday for the women.
- Houston has historically had a strong presence at both the West Preliminary Round and NCAA Championships, taking 20-plus athletes to the regional meet for the past six seasons the meet has been held.
- Coming off Most Valuable Performer and Most Outstanding Performer honors at the American Athletic Conference Championships on Sunday, junior Shaun Maswanganyi will compete in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash races in Sacramento.
- Maswanganyi ran 9.96 in the 100 and 19.99 in the 200, winning both races, at the conference championships. The junior ranks second in the West Region in both events.
- Senior Cecilia Tamayo-Garza ran a new Mexican record in the 200 at the conference championships, beating her own record set this season by running 22.45.
- Tamayo-Garza ranks 10th in the West in the 100 and sixth in the 200.
- Juniors Lloyd Frilot and Adam Mason went one-two in the 800-meter run at the American Championships and rank 24th and 43rd in the 800 but with less than three-quarters of a second separating the two.
- The men's hurdling duo of junior De'Vion Wilson and senior DJ Akindele will run both the 110-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles.
- Wilson and Akindele rank third and ninth in the West in the 110 hurdles and Wilson has won three-straight 110 hurdle races.
- Senior Sydni Townsend ranks second in the West in the 400 hurdles and is coming off a school record in the event at the conference championships.
- Townsend ran 55.99 to break the 32-year-old record set in 1991 by hurdles coach Sandra Glover.
- In the pole vault, senior Christyan Sampy won his second outdoor conference title and brings the fifth-best jump in the West. The senior broke his own school record on Senior Day with a 5.56-meter jump.
- Senior Nu'uausala Tuilefano won both the indoor and outdoor conference shot put titles in 2023 and will make her third-straight West Preliminary Round appearance.
- Tuilefano is a two-time NCAA Indoor All-American looking for her first berth to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
- The top 12 finishers in each event qualify for the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas June 7-10.
