Hawai’i transfer to compete as junior with Cougars in 2023-24
HOUSTON – Hyeonji Kang became the newest member of the University of Houston Women's Golf program after recently signing a scholarship agreement, Carolyn Macow Leatherwood Head Coach Lydia Gumm announced Tuesday.
Playing her first two collegiate seasons at Hawai'i, Kang will compete as a junior with the Cougars beginning in 2023-24 and have two years of eligibility remaining.
"Hyeonji is a great player and adds more competition to our roster. She has a wonderful personality and fits our culture well," Gumm said. "She brings good experience having played at Hawai'i for two years. We are excited to bring Hyeonji aboard and make our program better and better."
As a sophomore at Hawai'i in 2022-23, Kang received All-Big West Conference First Team honors after leading the Rainbow Wahine with a 74.1 scoring average and five rounds of par or better.
The Jeju, South Korea, native earned three Top-10 finishes with a second-place showing at the Cowgirl Classic and a fifth-place finish at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational.
In her first collegiate season, Kang was named to the All-Big West Conference Second Team and was a member of the league's All-Tournament Team. She also was selected as a Women's Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team member and was a member of the Big West All-Academic Team.
She earned three Top-10 finishes with a fourth-place showing at the Big West Championships.
Before entering the collegiate ranks, Kang was a 2021 graduate of Al Mawakeb School in Dubai and won the 2019 Singha Thailand Amateur Open, which is one of Asia's premier amateur junior events. She also was a two-time EGF Order of Merit Champion with five Top-10 finishes during the 2018 and 2019 seasons.
