Houston drops conference opener to Green Wave 10-8
CLEARWATER, Florida – Tulane defeated Houston, 10-8, in the third game of the 2023 American Baseball Championship presented by Visit St. Pete Clearwater Tuesday afternoon at BayCare Ballpark.
Houston (33-22) will face the loser of the Tigers and Shockers on Wednesday, May 24 at approximately 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+ in an elimination game.
Tulane (16-39) scored eight runs in the second inning off 3-run home runs from Jake LaPrairie and Gavin Schulz and a 2-run long ball from Brady Marget. Houston responded with a 5-run second inning to pull within one run at 8-7.
Teo Banks added RBIs in the fourth and ninth innings to push the Green Wave to victory.
Junior third baseman Zach Arnold drove in three runs to lead the Cougars.
Tulane's Chandler Welch (4-5) earned the win after pitching 5.2 innings with one run allowed and six strikeouts. Michael Fowler pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season. Junior starter Josh Ekness (2-4) took the loss for the Cougars.
