Super senior Braxton Watkins among Top-20 leaders to pace Cougars entering Wednesday’s Final Round
AUBURN, Ala. – For the second straight day, University of Houston super senior Braxton Watkins led the Cougars and stood among the Top-20 individual leaders at the Second Round of the NCAA Auburn Regional on Tuesday afternoon.
After shooting a 73 in Monday's First Round, Watkins drained a team-high four birdies on the way to a 74 and was tied for 19th at 147 on the 7,591-yard, par-72 course at Auburn University Club.
Starting the Second Round off No. 10, Watkins endured a pair of bogeys on his first three holes but rebounded to sink two birdies in a three-hole stretch at Nos. 13-15.
The Winthrop, Ark., native drained back-to-back birdies on Nos. 2-3 in the third NCAA Regional appearance of his career.
As a team, Houston finished with a score of 301 Tuesday and was in 10th with a two-day total of 601.
Senior Austyn Reily stood in 29th at 148 while sophomore Wolfgang Glawe was tied for 48th at 153. Junior Santiago De La Fuente was tied for 54th at 154 with sophomore Jacob Borow in 65th at 157.
Host and 13th-ranked Auburn held the team lead through 36 holes with a score of 1-under 575 to stand one shot ahead of #48 Chattanooga. #24 Colorado State (578), #1 Vanderbilt (580) and #25 Ohio State (587) rounded out the Top Five with Indiana (588), #37 TCU (590), #36 Washington (590) and #12 Tennessee (595) completing the Top 10.
Colorado State's Christop Bleier held the individual lead at 137 after posting a round in the 60s for the second straight day. Auburn's Brendan Valdes and Chattanooga's John Houk were tied for second at 139 while Indiana's Drew Salyers and Maxwell Moldovan of Ohio State were tied for fourth at 140.
The NCAA Auburn Regional concludes with the Final Round beginning Wednesday morning. The top five teams and top student-athlete (not on an advancing team) at each of the six NCAA Regional sites advance to the NCAA Championships to be played at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., on May 26-31.
In addition to the Auburn University Club, NCAA Regionals are being played at Eagle Eye (Bath, Michigan); Bear's Best Las Vegas (Las Vegas); The Institute Golf Club (Morgan Hill, Calif.); Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club (Norman, Okla.) and The Cliffs at Keowee Falls (Salem, S.C.).

For the third straight season and the ninth time under Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke, the Cougars will compete as a team in NCAA Regional play. This also will mark the 23rd NCAA Regional appearance in program history.
A year ago, the Cougars finished 12th in the NCAA Stockton Regional at The Reserve at Spanos Park.
