SERIES HISTORY. In only six years of competition between the two teams, the Cougars and Shockers have played 22 times including nine times in 2021. This series will be the first of two this season. Last season, Houston won both series while also beating the Shockers 10-7 in the conference tournament opener.
LAST TIME OUT. In the first game of the Silver Glove Series between the Cougars and cross-town rival Rice, Houston won 14-13. The Cougars came from behind late and ultimately walked off the Owls.
MURRAY MANIA. Two-way player Justin Murray has made his mark on the Houston baseball program. The junior has made four appearances in the last week. Last weekend, he threw 6.2 innings and not allowing a run while striking out six batters. He earned his first win of the season against No. 8 ECU tossing the final three innings of the game before being credited with his third save in the final game of the series and earning the win against Rice on Tuesday.
WALK IT OFF. Houston secured its second walk off of the week beating Rice 14-13. Previously, the Cougars walked off No. 8 ECU in the first game of the conference opening series. Sophomore outfielder Cameron Nickens has hit both walk off hits.
HONOR ROLL. After their performances against East Carolina and Sam Houston both Alex Lopez and Justin Murray were named to the conferences' weekly honor roll.
DOUBLE PLAY. After turning three double plays against Rice, the Cougars are ranked 12th in the nation for double plays with 27 on the season as well as being No. 23 in double plays per game.
REACHING SAFELY. Zach Arnold and Justin Murray are both on a 25-game reached base streak. Arnold has reached in every game that he has played this season while Murray's dates back to the second game of the season against Cal on Feb. 19.
COUNTDOWN TO 400. Three wins this week could mark Houston's head coach Todd Whitting's 400th career win. He is currently at 397.
TULIMERO CAREER DAY. Against Rice, junior catcher Anthony Tulimero had career high stats recording a career high two home runs and four RBI while tying his career high in runs at three.
MLB OPENING DAY. Two former Houston baseball players made their respective MLB Opening Day rosters on Thursday. Hometown hero Corey Julks made the hometown teams' Opening Day roster (Astros) while Connor Wong secured a spot on the Red Sox roster. Both Jared Triolo (Pittsburgh) and John King (Rangers) are currently on their clubs 40-man roster but were option to their respective Triple-A teams.
STEALTHY STEALING. Houston sits at 53 for 63 on stolen bases this season moving to No. 22 nationally. Last week, Houston was a perfect 4 for 4 on stolen bases. Brandon Burckel leads the charge with 14 stolen bags and is ranked No. 43 in the nation and first in the conference.
