Freshman Moa Svedenskiold posts 68 in Second Round to move into second entering Wednesday’s Final Round
BROOKSVILLE, Fla. – University of Houston freshman Moa Svedenskiold drained birdies on four of her final six holes to finish with a 4-under 68 in Tuesday's Second Round and move into second at the American Athletic Conference Championships.
As a team, the Cougars posted a score of even-par 288 to stand in fourth with a two-day total of 572 entering Wednesday's Final Round on the 6,289-yard, par-72 course at Southern Hills Plantation Golf Club.
#26 SMU held the Second-Round lead at 565 to finish six shots ahead of #37 Tulsa and #19 UCF. South Florida (581) and East Carolina (583) completed the Top-Six leaders.
Competing in her first collegiate postseason event, Svedenskiold opened the Second Round with a birdie but fell above par with consecutive bogeys on Nos. 7-8. Fortunately, she returned to even par with a birdie on the par-4 ninth hole to close her first nine.
The Halmstad, Sweden, native stayed at even par with a birdie on the par-4 11th hole and a bogey on No. 12 and then closed the day with birdies on four of her last six holes, including back-to-back efforts on Nos. 13-14.
Svedenskiold's 18-hole total was the lowest by a Cougar at The American Championships since All-American Karen Fredgaard posted a 67 in the Final Round at the 2021 Championships on Pinehurst #6 at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina.
SMU's Michelle Zhang held the individual lead after 36 holes with a score of 10-under 134. UCF's Anna Nordfors stood in third at 139 while Lilly Thomas (Tulsa), Oda Sofie Kilsti (East Carolina), Jess Baker (UCF) and Melanie Green (South Florida) were tied for fourth at 141.
Junior Nicole Abelar joined Svedenskiold among the Top-10 leaders with a score of 1-under 143 to tie for eighth after posting a 73 Tuesday.
Freshman Alexa Saldana was tied for 14th at 145 while super senior Annie Kim was tied for 19th at 146. Freshman Natalie Saint Germain was tied for 26th at 148.
The American Championships wraps up with the Final Round on Wednesday morning. The winner of the league's annual postseason event receives an automatic bid to NCAA Regional play, set for May 8-10.
