Pole vaulter ties school record, Tamayo-Garza runs 22.89 at Mt. SAC Relays
WALNUT, Calif. – Seniors Christyan Sampy and Cecilia Tamayo-Garza posted two of the best marks in the country, conference and school record books on Saturday at the Mt. SAC Relays as Sampy tied his school record and Tamayo-Garza ran the fifth-fastest 200-meter dash mark all-time in program history.
Sampy, who set the school record in 2022, jumped 5.55 meters in the pole vault on Saturday, finishing second among collegiate jumpers in the Elite division of the event. Sampy cleared 5.55 meters on his second attempt and ranks seventh in the country this season and leads the American Athletic Conference.
Tamay-Garza ran 22.89 for the first sub-23 second 200 since Brianne Bethel ran 22.54 in 2021. Tamayo-Garza widens her lead in the conference and moves up to seventh in the West region descending order list. The 22.89 mark keeps Tamayo-Garza at fifth all-time in school history.
In the 110-meter hurdles, junior De'Vion Wilson ran 13.41 for the second time this season, but also ran with an over-the-allowed 2.0 meters-per-second wind aid at 2.2 m/s. Wilson ran 13.41 at the Texas Relays with a 4.0 m/s tailwind. The junior still leads the conference but now has a teammate just a few tenths of a second behind at 13.66 as senior DJ Akindele ran a personal-best time but under the same 2.2 m/s wind.
Sophomore Destiny Smith ran 13.26 in the 100-meter hurdles, a season-best for the sophomore that moves her into second place in the conference this season.
