Cougars post a second consecutive one-run loss to a ranked conference opponent
WICHITA, Kansas – The University of Houston softball team couldn't complete an upset, falling 5-4 to #20/#23 Wichita State on a chilly and windy Saturday afternoon at Wilkins Stadium.
Senior Mattie Boyd threw a majority of Houston's innings, allowing only one earned run in four innings while striking out two. Sophomore Hannah Blincoe (2-3) picked up the decision for Houston (18-21, 5-3) with one inning of work, while Alex Aguilar (10-2) clinched the win for Wichita State (36-7, 10-1).

Key Innings
1st | Wichita State grabbed an early lead, plating a pair of runs in the first. After doubling to reach base, Addison Barnard scored on a Sami Hood single. Lauren Lucas scored in the next at-bat as Camryn Compton singled to make the score 2-0.
4th | After trading runs in the second, the Cougars used a three-run fourth inning to take their first lead of the day. After loading the bases with only one out, Lorenzo used a sacrifice fly to plate junior outfielder Paige Hulsey. Bree Cantu immediately followed it up with a two-run double to center that allowed Carden and sophomore outfielder Ja'Naiya Thomas to score, giving Houston a 4-3 lead.
6th. | Wichita State reclaimed the lead in the sixth. The Shockers loaded the bases with two outs and Bailey Urban hit a single to deep right field that allowed a pair to score, earning the 5-4 lead.
Depsite Houston loading the bases in the seventh, Wichita State shut the door to claim the win.

Houston closes the series against Wichita State on Sunday at noon. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
