Maswanganyi, Tamayo-Garza, Wilson move into top 5 in four different events
AUSTIN, Texas – Three Houston track and field student-athletes posted four top five times nationally on the final day of the 95th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Saturday, all in the sprinting or hurdling events.
Houston had athletes competing in eight different events on Saturday and had five top eight finishes including a silver medal by junior Shaun Maswanganyi in the men's invitational 100-meter dash.
Houston started the day with the 3,200-meter relay, finishing sixth overall. Adam Mason, Theo Andre, Jeremiah Wilson and Lloyd Frilot each ran 800-meter legs of the relay in a total time of 7:34.85.
After winning his heat of the 110-meter hurdles on Friday, junior De'Vion Wilson finished fifth overall in the final in a season-best 13.60 seconds. All five of the top times from the 110 hurdles at the Texas Relays were faster than the previous leader in the country.
Maswanganyi started his day by running the fastest 100 in the country this season, posting a 10.01-second time. If it weren't for a 2.9 m/s tailwind, the time would be fifth-fastest in school history.
The junior then had just 30 minutes to turn around and run the men's invitational 200-meter dash, which he ran in a season-best 20.41 seconds which ranks fourth nationally this season. Both of Maswanganyi's times lead the conference through April 1.
Senior Cecilia Tamayo-Garza ran the women's invitational 200 as well finishing eighth overall, but third among collegiate athletes, running a season-best 23.07. Tamayo-Garza's time ranks fifth nationally and leads the conference.
In the mile, senior Devin Vallejo-Bannister ran 4:14.28 and finished eighth overall in his first collegiate outdoor mile.
In Houston's lone field events of the day, senior Christyan Sampy cleared 5.51 meters in the pole vault on his second attempt and graduate Nu'uausala Tuilefano threw 15.60 meters in the shot put.
Sampy made his outdoor season debut in the pole vault and now leads the American Athletic Conference in the event.
