Bearkats secure series opener, 9-3 in Huntsville
The Cougars (12-13) will face the Bearkats (16-10) three times this season for the Don Sanders Cup. The next matchup will take place Tuesday, April 11 at Schroeder Park. The finale is set for Tuesday, May 16 from Constellation Field in Sugar Land, Texas.
Houston sophomore right-hander Cade Citelli (1-3) took the loss, throwing 1.2 innings while surrendering six runs on five hits. Bearkats' junior southpaw Marshall Wales (1-2) came away with the win, tossing 5.0 innings while allowing one run.
Game Highlights:
- Zach Arnold extended his reached base streak to 21 games with a hit by pitch in the third inning.
- Malachi Lott made his first appearance on the mound after starting in the outfield. The only other game where Lott has both pitched and batted was against UTSA.
- Braedyn Cunningham made his collegiate debut on the mound registering only one hit in 1.0 inning.
2nd | Sam Houston started out strong in the second inning plating six runs in the bottom of the frame to secure an early 6-0 lead.
3rd | The Cougars answered back in the top of the third as senior shortstop Ian McMillan drew a walk to get Houston on the board. Junior third baseman Zach Arnold was hit by a pitch before junior utility player Alex Lopez dropped a ball into right field to bring McMillan home for the Cougars' first run.
Sam Houston was not done scoring as the Bearkats brought across two runs in the fourth before tallying one in the sixth for a 9-1 lead.
7th | McMillan got Houston going again this time in the seventh. A single from senior outfielder Brandon Uhse followed by a Brandon Burckel double put the Cougars in scoring position with McMillan coming to the plate. With two away, McMillan drove one into left field, plating Uhse and Burckel to trim the deficit to 9-3. Houston could not find its rhythm in the top of the ninth in the 9-3 defeat.
