Team White takes down Team Red during Alumni, Fan Appreciation Day
HOUSTON – Houston senior Brandon Uhse accounted for seven RBIs, courtesy of a grand slam and three-run home run, to lead Team White past Team Red, 11-3 as part of an action-packed Alumni Day and Fan Appreciation Day on Sunday at Schroeder Park.
Â
Houston, which opens its season one week from Friday at home against Cal, welcomed back multiple decades of alumni to the ballpark. A handful of former standouts got into the action including Ryan Hernandez delivering a sacrifice fly and Patrick Weigel providing three strikeouts.
Alex Lopez drew a bases-loaded walk in the first inning, putting Team White ahead 1-0 following a Zach Arnold walk, Anthony Tulimero single and Cary Arbolida walk. Uhse, who clubbed nine home runs a season ago, followed, clocking a no-doubt grand slam over the left field fence for a 5-0 Team White lead.
First baseman Alex Lopez provided the defensive snag of the day, stabbing a line drive off the bat of Dylan Post in the third inning to rob the catcher of extra bases but Team Red broke through in the frame, using a second baseman Zack Zavala walk, left fielder Gabe Flores single and sacrifice fly from Hernandez to cut the deficit to 5-1, after Team White starter Tommy Egan retired the first seven batters he faced.
Team White blew things open in the home half. Arbolida provided a two-out, RBI-single to score Arnold who reached for a second time. Uhse delivered his second home run of the day, a three-run shot into left, putting Team White ahead 9-1. The distances on Uhse's two home runs measured at 418 feet and 420 feet, respectively.
Zavala deposited a two-out, solo home run over the left field wall for Team Red's second run of the game after Maddux Miller fanned his first two hitters of the fifth inning. Tulimero got into the long ball action, clobbering a solo homer into left center to make it 10-2 in the home half. Lopez tacked on with an RBI-double. Team Red right fielder Cameron Nickens got into the home run onslaught, slicing a solo homer down the left field line in the sixth.
