A late surge wasn’t enough to push Houston past Washington on Sunday
HOUSTON – The University of Houston softball team couldn't overcome a five-run second inning in a 7-3 loss to #12/14 Washington on Sunday afternoon at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
Â
Turiya Coleman continued swinging a hot bat in the game, hitting a three-run home run to pace the Cougar offense. Kenna Wilkey threw 4.1 scoreless innings in relief, only allowing two Huskey hits in her outing.
Â
Washington capitalized on Houston miscues in the second inning to take the lead, plating five runs on two hits and three errors from the Cougar defense.Â
Â
Husky freshman Ruby Meylan, who hadn't allowed an earned run in 20 innings so far this season, was dealing throughout, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning.Â
Â
Houston finally broke through Meylan's pitching attack in the sixth. Amanda Carden reached on and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Washington second baseman and reached third on a Ja'Naiya Thomas single. Coleman used her next at bat to send a three-run home run over the center-field fence, cutting Houston's deficit to 5-3.
Â
Washington tacked on two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh, but Houston's offense couldn't complete the comeback, falling 7-3 to the ranked Huskies.Â
Â
