2/19/2023 5:33:00 PM | Baseball
Houston scores four times late to earn 8-6 win in series finale
Â
The back-and-forth affair featured five lead changes including the Cougars (1-2) taking a one-run advantage courtesy of a two-run seventh inning which featured an RBI-double from senior Brandon Uhse and junior Justin Murray sacrifice fly before the Golden Bears (2-1) tied the game in the top of the eighth.
Â
After Cal evened the contest at six-all in the top of the eighth, Houston applied the pressure in the home half. Sophomore Malachi Lott drew a leadoff four-pitch walk and stole second. Sophomore Brandon Burckel moved Lott to third on a bunt single and stole second to put two in scoring position with no outs.
Â
Arnold's RBI-base knock and junior Alex Lopez's sacrifice fly provided Houston a two-run cushion in an up-for-grab contest that featured a combined 24 hits. Houston senior reliever José Torrealba (1-1) locked up the win, stranding the bases loaded in the eighth before adding two punchouts in a perfect ninth.
Â
Burckel provided a major boost offensively in the nine-hole, finishing 3 for 3 with three RBIs. The Lindale, Texas, native reached base four times and added one stolen base. After Cal jumped out to a 2-0 lead, Burckel evened the contest on a two-run double in the second. Two innings later, he provided a two-out, RBI-double as part of a two-run inning.Â
Â
Houston batted .344 (11 for 32) on the day including .381 (8 for 21) with runners aboard and .400 (4 for 10) with runners in scoring position. Cougar leadoff batters reached base in five of eight opportunities. Seven different Cougars registered at least one hit.
