Farris Earns Second at First Day of American Championships

Senior diver Chase Farris places second in 1-meter event
DALLAS – Senior diver Chase Farris led the University of Houston Swimming & Diving program with a second-place finish in the 1-meter event on Monday evening on the first day of the 2023 American Athletic Conference Championships from the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium.
After the conclusion of day one, Houston leads with 115 points, followed by FIU (72), Florida Atlantic (53), East Carolina (49), North Texas (38) and SMU (32).
"It was a super exciting time for Chase," Houston Diving Coach Bob Gunter said. "She had the chance to perform a new dive and set a new personal best.
It was a really great day for our divers. We had five in the top 10 with four advancing to finals. I'm extremely happy with everyone's performance today and look forward to the next two days."
The Mission Viejo, Calif., native finished with a six-dive score of 305.80. Farris' best dive of the day came on her fourth attempt when she earned a score of 64.50 after completing a 305C Reverse 2 1/2 Somersault Tuck.
SMU's Nicole Stambo took first with a score of 307.55, while Florida Atlantic's Alicia Mora earned the third spot on the podium with a score of 287.50.
The Cougars earned crucial points in the final with junior Hedda Grelz in fifth (280.40), sophomore Josie Graves in seventh (264.85) and junior Emilia Waters in eighth place (262.45). Senior Jolie Blodgett added additional points to Houston's score by placing second in the consolation final with a score of 254.20.
The diving portion of the meet will continue Tuesday and Wednesday, while the swimming portion of the meet begins Wednesday and runs through Saturday.
