#22 Volleyball Falls to #25 Baylor

Cougars drop road finale to Bears
WACO, Texas – The #22 University of Houston Volleyball team posted a .324 hitting percentage along with 65 kills, but couldn't overcome #25 Baylor in the Cougars' regular-season road finale at Ferrell Center on Wednesday evening.
Houston (17-9, 10-7 Big 12) led the match in most statistical categories, including hitting percentage (.324-.287), kills (65-56), digs (62-55) and blocks (8.0-4.0), but Baylor (16-12, 10-8 Big 12) rallied behind seven service aces to take the win.
Gradaute Kenna Sauer led Houston with a double-double featuring 21 kills and 11 digs. With 21 kills, she earned her second match of the season and eighth career match with 20-or-more kills. Graduate Abbie Jackson also tallied a double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs, while junior Kellen Morin recorded 10 kills and added five blocks. Senior Kate Georgiades used 18 digs to post her 97th career match with double-digits in the category.
Senior Annie Cooke recorded 28 assists in the match to bring her career total to 3,135, passing Susan Rice (3,116; 1989-90) for sole control of fifth on Houston's career assists list.
SET ONE
The teams traded points early, remaining even after 12 points. Houston used a 3-0 run to take the early lead, but Baylor answered with a run of its own to again tie the set at 10-10. The teams remained close, fighting to another stalemate at 16-16, but the Bears pulled ahead with a 4-1 stretch to take a 20-17 lead. While Houston came within one, Baylor closed the set, 25-23.
Houston recorded three blocks in the set, while holding Baylor to none.
SET TWO
While the teams remained close early, fighting to a tie at 10-10, Houston rallied with a 5-1 run to take the lead. From there, the Cougars never allowed Baylor closer than three points, cruising to a 25-19 win.
The Cougars tallied 19 digs in the set, led by Georgiades' seven. Sauer led Houston's hitters with six kills and a .308 hitting efficiency.
SET THREE
The Cougars jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the third and continued to hold the lead at 11-6, but the Bears surged with a 9-1 run to take a 15-12 lead. While Houston would tie the set at 16-16, neither team found a clear advantage, with the score again evening nine times and forcing extra play at 25-25. Baylor was able to earn back-to-back points winning the frame, 27-25.
Houston again outhit Baylor, .293-.186, while Jackson tallied seven kills without an error and Morin recorded three blocks.
SET FOUR
Baylor started the fourth with a 3-0 run to earn the edge, but Houston rallied with a 4-0 run to take the lead. The teams remained close, battling to eight ties before 12-12. The Bears used a 3-1 stretch to retake the advantage and kept Houston at arms length for the remainder of the set, winning 25-19.
The Cougars hit over .300 in the set, posting a 17-5-37 line for a .324 efficiency. Sauer led Houston with seven kills.
UP NEXT
The Cougars host Kansas State at 2 p.m., Saturday to close out the regular season inside Fertitta Center. The match is Houston's Senior Day, with the ceremony taking place shortly after the conclusion of the competition. The Saturday matinee is also Houston's canned food drive. Any fan that brings any canned goods will receive free admission to the match.
The game will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
