Men’s Golf Closes Fall Season at Big 12 Match Play

Cougars to meet No. 2 seed Oklahoma at 7:45 a.m., Monday, at The Clubs at Houston Oaks; Will face No. 7 seed BYU in afternoon play
HOCKLEY, Texas – The University of Houston Men's Golf program closes out its fall season when it tees off at the Big 12 Match Play Tournament at The Clubs at Houston Oaks, beginning Monday morning.
This will be the Cougars' first match-play action during the 2023-24 season.
Monday's first match against No. 2 seed Oklahoma begins at 7:45 a.m., off hole Nos. 6-8. The afternoon session against No. 7 seed BYU begins around 1:15 p.m., Monday, off hole Nos. 13-15.
The Cougars face No. 9 seed Cincinnati at 7:45 a.m., Tuesday, off hole No. 16-18.
FORMAT
Each team match will consist of five individual matches.
The Cougars will compete as the No. 10 seed based on the Big 12 Coaches Rankings. Houston will be joined in Pool B by No. 2 seed Oklahoma and No. 7 seed BYU.
Pool A consists of No. 1 Texas, No. 8 Kansas State and No. 9 Cincinnati while Pool C includes No. 3 Baylor, No. 6 TCU, No. 11 Iowa State and No. 14 UCF. Pool D holds #4 Texas Tech, #5 Oklahoma State, #12 Kansas and No. 13 West Virginia.
Teams will advance from Pool Play based on their point totals. The bracket format begins on Wednesday morning during Session 5.

ABOUT the COUGARS
Under the leadership of Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke, the Cougars will be represented by senior All-American Santiago De La Fuente, freshman Chi Chun Chen, super senior Austyn Reily, junior Wolfgang Glawe, sophomore Hudson Weibel and junior Jacob Borow.
After earning All-America honors a year ago, senior Santiago De La Fuente continues to lead the Cougars in 2023-24. The Guadalajara, Mexico, native has posted a 70.00 scoring average with five rounds of par or better. He tied for second at the season-opening Argent Financial Classic on Sept. 10-12 and was the Cougars' leading performer at the Highlands Invitational on Sept. 18-19.
Glawe stands second among the Cougars with a 72.00 average and joined De La Fuente among the Top-20 leaders at the Argent Financial Classic.
Weibel is in his first season at Houston after transferring from Oklahoma during the summer and stands second among the Cougars with four sub-par rounds this season, including a season-low 67 in the Second Round at the Highlands Invitational on Sept. 18.
Chen will make his collegiate debut after an award-winning junior career in his native Taiwan.

LAST TIME OUT
The Cougars were rained out of their last tournament when wet weather forced the postponement of the Robert Steele Cup against Sam Houston at Golfcrest Country Club in Pearland, Texas.
In its most recent action, Houston finished sixth at the Highlands Invitational at Chicago Highlands Club on Sept. 18-19. De La Fuente opened that tournament with back-to-back 71s and tied for 24th at 1-under 215. Sophomore Hudson Weibel enjoyed the team's low 18-hole total with a 67 in the Second Round.
UP NEXT
Following the Big 12 Match Play Tournament, the Cougars will take their holiday break.
From there, Houston returns to action to open its spring season at the Southwestern Invitational at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif., on Jan. 29-31.
The Cougars then return to the Lone Star State to play host to the Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas on Feb. 19-20.
