#22 Volleyball Sweeps Texas Tech to Close Weekend

Houston posted its second consecutive three-set win
LUBBOCK, Texas – The #22 University of Houston Volleyball team earned a second three-set win over Texas Tech on Saturday afternoon at United Supermarkets Arena.
Houston (11-7, 4-5 Big 12) claimed its sixth sweep of the season and fourth in conference play. The Cougars again held Texas Tech (8-14, 1-9 Big 12) to a sub-.100 hitting percentage, limiting the Red Raiders to a .077 efficiency.
Graduate Kenna Sauer and junior Kellen Morin tied for the team lead with 10 kills each. It marked Morin's first time leading Houston in the category this season and her fifth career double-digit kill performance. Senior Annie Cooke posted her third double-double of the year with 16 assists and 10 digs while senior Kate Georgiades earned her 90th career double-digit digs tally with 14 in the match. Graduate Morgan Janda paced all setters in the match with 17 assists.
SET ONE
Texas Tech had an early advantage in the first, holding an 8-5 lead after 13 points. The Red Raiders extended their lead to four, 15-11, at the media timeout, but saw their lead shrink to two at 20-18. Houston controlled the remainder of the set, finishing on a 7-1 run to take the first, 25-21.
Sauer tallied six kills in the first set while both Georgiades and graduate Abbie Jackson posted six digs each.
SET TWO
Holding onto their momentum from the first set, the Cougars pounced early in the second, taking a 7-2 lead and forcing a Texas Tech timeout. While the Red Raiders would get within one at 9-8, Houston reextended its lead with a 4-0 run to make the score 16-11. The Cougars strung together short runs for the rest of the set to maintain its lead and take the frame, 25-18.
Seven different Cougars tallied a kill in the second while Cooke posted five digs.
SET THREE
The Cougars continued to cruise in the third, taking a 4-1 lead after five points and further extended its lead with a 3-0 run to push the score to 7-3. Texas Tech closed its deficit to 8-7, but a 4-0 stretch for Houston reopened its lead to 12-7. The Red Raiders quickly fought their way back into the set, tying the frame at 15-15, while the Cougars answered with a 4-0 stretch to retake the lead which held for the rest of the set, giving the Cougars a 25-20 win.
Morin led Houston with four kills in the third. Janda tallied six assists and Sauer posted five digs.
NOTABLES
- Sophomore Alana Torres-Rivera posted her first career kill in the match.
- Houston improved to 33-18 all-time against Texas Tech.
- Head Coach David Rehr earned his 95th win at Houston with 42 coming via sweep.
- Houston is 9-0 this season when leading 2-0 and is 11-1 when winning the first set.
UP NEXT
Houston closes a three-match road stretch with its third nationally televised game of the season next weekend against Cincinnati. First serve on Oct. 29 is scheduled for noon on ESPNU.
