Sophomore posts 5-under 67 Tuesday on way to third straight Top-Seven finish to open season
MEDINAH, Ill. – University of Houston Women's Golf sophomore Moa Svedenskiold posted a 5-under 67 to lead the Cougars during the Final Round of the Illini Invitational at Medinah on Tuesday afternoon.
An All-Conference performer a year ago, Svedenskiold finished with four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 fourth hole and finished the 54-hole event with a score of 5-under 211 to tie for sixth.
The Halmstad, Sweden, native recorded her ninth straight round of par or lower and her third straight Top-Seven finish to open the 2023-24 season.
As a team, the 20th-ranked Cougars enjoyed their lowest round of the tournament on the 6,166-yard, par-72 No. 2 course and tied for sixth with No. 22 Georgia at even-par 864.
Svedenskiold began her day with a bogey at No. 11, but that would be the last blemish on her scorecard. She drained three birdies in a four-hole stretch at Nos. 13-15 and moved to 4-under on the day with an eagle-3 on the 492-yard fourth hole. She added her final birdie of the day at No. 9.
Junior Hyeonji Kang sank five birdies of her own and finished with a 69 Tuesday. Starting off No. 11, the Jeju, South Korea, native overcame consecutive birdies at Nos. 17-18 and finished the tournament with four birdies during her last eight holes to tie for 25th at 216.
Sophomore Alexa Saldana posted a 72 in the Final Round and tied for 19th at 1-under 215. Senior Nicole Abelar tied for 62 and 225 while sophomore Natalie Saint Germain – making her season debut – tied for 69th at 227.
#13 LSU captured the team championship with a score of 837 to finish nine shots ahead of #8 Mississippi State. #29 Northwestern (850), #11 San Jose State (854) and #32 Oklahoma State (860) rounded out the Top-Five leaders with #44 Ohio State (866), #40 SMU (868) and #36 Alabama (868) completing the Top 10.
LSU teammates Latanna Stone and Ingrid Lindblad tied for medalist honors at 207. Ohio State's Faith Choi and Illinois' Isabel Sy tied for third at 208 with San Jose State Tessa Kremser finished fifth at 210.
MISSING in ACTION
The Cougars were without the services of freshman Maelynn Kim, who has competed in each of the team's first two tournaments… but for a good reason.
During the summer, the Houston native and Seven Lakes High School product won the individual title at The Ascendant LPGA Benefiting Volunteer of America Girls Championship. For her impressive achievement, she earned an exemption into this week's The Ascendant LPGA benefiting Volunteers of America at Old American Golf Club in The Colony, Texas.
This season, Kim has posted a 70.33 scoring average with five rounds of par or better and earned a career-best 17th-place finish at the Schooner Falls Classic, thanks to a 66 in the First Round, on Sept. 23-25.
