WHAT TO WATCH FOR |
- Houston's "Sack Ave." had its coming out party when the Cougars and Green Wave met a season ago in New Orleans. Houston's defense registered eight sacks. The eight sacks remain tied for the third most in an American Athletic Conference game.
- Houston defensive lineman D'Anthony Jones became the 10th American Athletic Conference player to produce multiple sacks (2.0) and multiple forced fumbles (2) in a game, doing so last week against Rice. It was the first time the feat had been accomplished since Tulane's Patrick Johnson (3.0 sacks, 2 forced fumbles) did so against ECU on Nov. 7, 2020. Jones is the fourth player nationally this season to do so.
- Houston's edge defenders have shown an elite ability getting to the quarterback. D'Anthony Jones ranks third nationally by Pro Football Focus (PFF) with a 91.4 pass rush grade while Derek Parish ranks fifth (90.3).
- Running back Ta'Zhawn Henry has made the most of his opportunities in his starting role. The senior rushed for 112 yards, exceeding the 100-yard mark for the third time in his career, last week vs. Rice. With 107 receiving yards two weeks ago against Kansas, he became the first Houston running back to record 100 yards receiving since Charles Sims on Oct. 18, 2012, at SMU.
FIVE THINGS TO KNOW |
-
Houston will hold its annual Blackout game Friday with fans encouraged to "Black Out" TDECU Stadium. The team will don white helmets, black jerseys and black pants. A season ago, Houston knocked off No. 19/16 SMU, 44-37, in the squad's Blackout game thanks to a go-ahead 100-yard kickoff return touchdown from Marcus Jones inside one minute remaining in the game.
-
Houston is the preseason favorite to win The American Athletic Conference for the first time since 2016. The Cougars are in search of their second American Athletic Conference title and first since 2015. A season ago, the Cougars posted an 8-0 record in league play, marking just the second undefeated conference season in program history.
- The last time Houston and Tulane met at TDECU Stadium was Oct. 8, 2020. Due to COVID-19 cancelations and postponements, the game was also the Cougars' season opener. The postponements/cancelations included: Rice (Sept. 3), Washington State (Sept. 12), Memphis (Sept. 18) and Baylor (Sept. 19). The Oct. 8 start was the latest in Houston program history (previous: Sept. 29, 1956).
- Houston has won 13 of its last 16 conference openers and is 7-2 in American Athletic Conference openers. The Cougars are 40-18-1 all- time in league openers including a 15-6 mark at home. Friday will be Houston's final American Conference opener before moving to the Big 12 Conference for the 2023 season.
- The Cougars have had their share of memorable non-Saturday wins under the lights on ESPN, most notably on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2016, when Houston sacked Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson 11 times, routing the #3/3 Cardinals, 36-10. Over the last 10 seasons, Houston is 10-5 in Friday contests including going 2-0 a season ago (Oct. 1 - win, 45-10 at Tulsa; Nov. 19 - win, 31-13 vs. Memphis).
- Friday marks the Cougars' 50th all-time game played at TDECU Stadium. Houston is 36-13 (.734) at the facility including a 23-9 mark against The American.
SCOUTING TULANE |
- Houston and Tulane are meeting for the 27th time overall including the fifth consecutive season on a non-Saturday. Friday marks the 20th meeting in the last 21 years between the two programs. Houston has won 15 of the last 18 matchups (2003-present).
- Houston is 8-1 in its last nine games at home against Tulane (2004-present) including a 3-1 mark at TDECU Stadium. Over its last 10 games against Tulane (2011-present), the Cougars are averaging 39.4 points per game, outscoring the Green Wave 394-218.
LAST TIME AGAINST TULANE |
- Clayton Tune passed for 288 yards and three touchdowns, including a go-ahead score late in the third quarter as Houston rallied past Tulane 40-22 on Oct. 7, 2021.
- With one forced fumble, Marcus Jones recorded his third forced fumble of the 2021 season and his career. It was the second straight game in which he forced a fumble and the first time since playing at Tulsa (Oct. 1, 2021).
- With 18 carries, freshman running back Alton McCaskill IV recorded double-digit carries in four consecutive game, setting a career high in that category. He also rushed for 70+ yards in his fourth consecutive game.
