WHAT TO WATCH FOR |
- Last Saturday at Texas Tech, the Cougars intercepted three passes including a 54-yard pick-six from senior Jayce Rogers. It marked the fourth time in the last 15 games (Sept. 11, 2021-present) Houston had registered three-plus interceptions.
- Last Saturday at Texas Tech, Houston defensive lineman Derek Parish set an American Athletic Conference record with 6.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. The 4.5 sacks ranks third in Houston single-game history and marks the most since Reggie Burnette logged 5.0 at SMU on Oct. 20, 1990. The 6.5 tackles for loss are the most by a Houston player since at least 2000.
-
Sophomore punter Laine Wilkins recorded a season-best punting average of 50.4 yards against Tech Tech. Wilkins' 67-yard punt with 9:42 to play in the first quarter marked a career high, besting his previous mark of 62 yards at Navy on Oct. 24, 2020. The Australian, who turned 28 years old in March, ranks fifth nationally with 48.5 yards per punt.
FIVE THINGS TO KNOW |
- Houston has won seven consecutive home openers dating to 2015. The Cougars' seven straight home-opening victories is the longest streak in program history. During that stretch, Houston has averaged 44.0 points per game and outscored opponents 308-93.
- The Cougars open the home slate against a current Big 12 Conference opponent for the first time since hosting Kansas on Sept. 1, 1994. The Jayhawks, who were then a member of the Big Eight Conference, defeated Houston, a member of the Southwest Conference, 35-13.
- The Cougars have won 14 of their last 16 home openers and are 46-30 all-time in home openers. Houston is 35-12 all-time at TDECU Stadium and has won its last six games at the facility dating to Nov. 14, 2020.
- The Cougars opened their season with a three-overtime win at UTSA and a double-overtime loss at Texas Tech. It marked the first time in program history that Houston had played back-to-back overtime games. It is also the most overtime games the Cougars have played in a single season since 2000. Houston and UTSA are the only schools nationally to have played multiple overtime games this season.
-
Houston has scored 10-plus points in 100 consecutive games (Sept. 2014-present). The Cougars have scored 21-plus points in 42 consecutive regular season home games (Sept. 2014-present)
SCOUTING KANSAS |
- Houston and Kansas are meeting for the fourth time in the history of the programs and first since the 2005 Fort Worth Bowl. The Jayhawks have won all three previous matchups, holding the Cougars to 13 points in each game.
- The Cougars lead the all-time series, which began in 1951, 18-14-1 but have dropped four straight (2010-present).
- Saturday marks the sixth contest between the teams in the last 14 seasons.
LAST TIME AGAINST KANSAS |
- Houston last faced Kansas 17 years ago in 2005 when the Cougars took a 42-13 loss in the Fort Worth Bowl.
- With a 19-yard pass to Ryan Gilbert in the second quarter, junior quarterback Kevin Kolb moved past the 9,000-yard mark passing during his collegiate career. He joined David Klingler (9,430 yards, 1988-91) as the only UH signal callers to throw for more than 9,000 yards during their careers.
- Defensive end Kade Lane made his 48th consecutive start, dating back to Aug. 31, 2002, against Rice at Rice Stadium. That was a school record and bested the previous mark of 46, set by offensive lineman Val Belcher from 1973-76. He also tied Larry Shepherd (1982-85) for the most games played as a Cougar during his career.
A HOUSTON WIN WOULD |
- Be Houston's first against Kansas in four all-time matchups.
- Be Houston's 15th in its last 17 home openers.
- Be Houston's seventh consecutive at home (Nov. 14, 2020-present), the program's longest since winning 15 straight regular season home games between Nov. 22, 2014-Sept. 16, 2017.
