Houston defeats South Florida for the first time since 2004
HOUSTON – Forward Maddie Bowers led the University of Houston Soccer program to a 2-1 victory against South Florida for its first American Athletic Conference win of the season on Thursday evening at the Carl Lewis International Complex.
This marked Houston's first win over South Florida since 2004 when the Cougars beat USF in a 1-0 overtime victory. It was also the teams first conference opener win since 2018.
Houston (4-3-1, 1-0 American) and South Florida (3-5-0, 0-1 American) each picked up 13 shots for the night, with a 9-4 advantage on net for the Cougars.
Houston fought the entire match trying to put a goal on the board, coming close in the 60th minute when midfielder Caitlyn Matthews came up with a shot but was blocked by South Florida's goalie Sydney Martinez.
Houston continued to knock on South Florida's door and found a breakthrough in the 71st minute with forward Janna Singleton scoring her third goal of the season, assisted by midfielder Madison Dichiara.
South Florida answered back three minutes later in the 75th minute with a goal from Signe Markvardsen, off of an assist from Meghan Root.
But the Cougars were not done scoring as Bowers found the back of the net off a set-play piece, assisted by midfielder Samantha Wiehe in the 83rd minute sealing the win for Houston.
